In this section, Paul used quotations from the Old Testament to show that the Jews sin against God. They are not better than the Gentiles. God will hold them responsible for their sins. Paul also said that when someone follows the law of Moses, that does not make God say he is righteous.
Here are other possible headings for this section:
Both Jews and Gentiles sin
No One is Righteous (NIV)
Everyone has sinned
and the way of peace they have not known.”
and they have not known the path of being at peace with others.”
Also, they do not know how to live peacefully with others.”
the way of peace they have not known: The phrase the way of peace is emphasized in this clause. In some languages it is more natural to have this phrase in its normal place. For example:
they have not known the way of peace
the way of peace: This phrase refers to how to live peacefully with others. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
the lifestyle of peace
the life of being at peace with others
the path which leads to harmony and peaceKankanaey Back Translation on TW.
to live peacefully/harmoniouslyYakan Back Translation on TW.
Note that the Greek word that the BSB translates as way is the same Greek word translated “wake” in 3:16. It helps show the contrast between the two ways of life. If possible, use way or “path” or “road” in both places.
These words are similar to the words found in Isaiah 59:7–8.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
ὁδὸν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί ὁδόν εἰρήνης οὐκ ἔγνωσαν)
See how you translated “ways” in the previous verse.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession
ὁδὸν εἰρήνης
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί ὁδόν εἰρήνης οὐκ ἔγνωσαν)
Paul is using the possessive form to describe a way that is characterized by peace. He means that these people do not understand how to live peacefully. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [a peaceful way] or [a peaceful way to behave]
3:10-18 The six quotations in these verses, drawn from various parts of the Old Testament, all address human sinfulness. Paul follows the practice of rabbis who gathered together Old Testament texts on similar themes in a practice called pearl-stringing.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
