In this section, Paul used quotations from the Old Testament to show that the Jews sin against God. They are not better than the Gentiles. God will hold them responsible for their sins. Paul also said that when someone follows the law of Moses, that does not make God say he is righteous.

In these verses Paul quoted parts of the Old Testament. He did that to show that God also considers everyone a wrongdoer.

It is like what they wrote in God’s holy book. It says:
As it is written: This phrase indicates that the following words are from Scripture. In some languages a literal translation would not clearly indicate that 3:4d–e are Scripture. If that is true in your language, you may want to explain it in the text. For example:

no one: Here the phrase no one means “not one person.”
righteous: Here the word righteous refers to people whom God considers to be right in their standing before him. Here are other ways to translate this word:

is right before God
In some languages, people use an idiom to express this meaning. For example:

is upright

This sentence is Paul’s paraphrase of [Psalm 14:3](../psa/014/003.md). It may be helpful to your readers to indicate this by setting off all of this material with quotation marks or with whatever punctuation or convention your language uses to indicate a quotation.

These two phrases mean the same thing. Paul says the same thing twice, in slightly different ways, to emphasize that not even one person is righteous. If it would be helpful in your language, you could combine the phrases into one. Alternate translation: [There is not even one person who is righteous] or [Absolutely no one who is righteous]

Paul is using the singular adjectives none righteous and one as nouns in order to describe all people. If your language does not use adjectives in the same way, you could translate this with a noun phrase. Alternate translation: [There are no righteous people, not any people] or [There is no righteous person, not even one person]
