18:1-31 The migration of the Danites (cp. Josh 19:40-48) is the story of that tribe’s failure to obey God’s covenant, and it is indicative of Israel’s decline. What began as Micah’s private heresy (Judg 17:4-5) would become the apostasy of an entire tribe (18:30-31). What began as covenant failure (1:19-36) turned into social breakdown in the days of Jephthah and Samson (chs 11–16). In the end, law and order were replaced by banditry and pillaging (18:27-28).
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
וְהֵ֣מָּה הִכִּ֔ירוּ אֶת ק֥וֹל הַנַּ֖עַר
and,they recognized DOM sound/voice the,young
The author assumes that readers will know that by voice he does not mean that the men knew who the Levite was from his individual voice. Rather, he is referring to the accent with which the Levite spoke. They recognized that he was from their area in Israel, since Zorah and from Eshtaol were near Bethlehem. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [and they recognized from his accent that this young man was from their area of the country]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
וּמַה לְּךָ֥ פֹֽה
and,what have,you here
The men are using a common expression of their culture to ask what means and possessions the young man has. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [And how are you making your living]
