TSNTyndale Study Notes:

18:1-31 The migration of the Danites (cp. Josh 19:40-48) is the story of that tribe’s failure to obey God’s covenant, and it is indicative of Israel’s decline. What began as Micah’s private heresy (Judg 17:4-5) would become the apostasy of an entire tribe (18:30-31). What began as covenant failure (1:19-36) turned into social breakdown in the days of Jephthah and Samson (chs 11–16). In the end, law and order were replaced by banditry and pillaging (18:27-28).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations

Please inquire of God that we may know, will our way prosper, upon which we {are} going?

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_said to=him/it inquire now in/on/at/with,God and,know whether,successful journey,our which/who we going on,her )

The men word their inquiry as if they were asking their question directly of God. It may be natural in your language to make this a direct quotation here. Alternate translation: “Please ask God for us something that we would like to know: ‘Will our way prosper, upon which we are going?’”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

will our way prosper, upon which we {are} going

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_said to=him/it inquire now in/on/at/with,God and,know whether,successful journey,our which/who we going on,her )

In some languages, this may appear to be a quotation within a quotation, which the language would not use. If that is the case for your language, you could express this more indirectly. Alternate translation: “whether the way upon which we are going will prosper”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

will our way prosper, upon which we are going

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_said to=him/it inquire now in/on/at/with,God and,know whether,successful journey,our which/who we going on,her )

The men are speaking of their way as if it were a living thing that could prosper. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “will we succeed in what we are trying to do”
