TSNTyndale Study Notes:

18:1-31 The migration of the Danites (cp. Josh 19:40-48) is the story of that tribe’s failure to obey God’s covenant, and it is indicative of Israel’s decline. What began as Micah’s private heresy (Judg 17:4-5) would become the apostasy of an entire tribe (18:30-31). What began as covenant failure (1:19-36) turned into social breakdown in the days of Jephthah and Samson (chs 11–16). In the end, law and order were replaced by banditry and pillaging (18:27-28).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / pastforfuture

God has given it into your hand

(Some words not found in UHB: when,go,you_all come to/towards people unsuspecting and=the=earth spacious_of measures that/for/because/then/when given,it ʼElohīm in/on/at/with,hands,your_all's place which/who not there lack all/each/any/every thing which/who on_the=earth )

The men are using the past tense to describe something that they believe will happen in the future in order to show that they are confident the event will happen. If it would be clearer in your language, you could use the future tense. Alternate translation: “God will give it into your hand” or “God clearly intends to give it into your hand”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

{at} two hands

(Some words not found in UHB: when,go,you_all come to/towards people unsuspecting and=the=earth spacious_of measures that/for/because/then/when given,it ʼElohīm in/on/at/with,hands,your_all's place which/who not there lack all/each/any/every thing which/who on_the=earth )

The author is using the term hands to mean the sides or extent of the land, by association with the way that people’s hands are at their sides. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “from one side to the other”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

no lack {is} there of any thing that {is} on the earth

(Some words not found in UHB: when,go,you_all come to/towards people unsuspecting and=the=earth spacious_of measures that/for/because/then/when given,it ʼElohīm in/on/at/with,hands,your_all's place which/who not there lack all/each/any/every thing which/who on_the=earth )

The men are making an overstatement for emphasis. If it would be clearer in your language, you could express the emphasis in a different way. Alternate translation: “there is abundant provision for human needs”
