TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:45 Philip, a Greek name, and Nathanael, a Hebrew name, represent the mix of cultures in Galilee. Jesus’ message there addressed both audiences. When Greeks wanted to see Jesus in Jerusalem, they approached Philip (12:20-22).
• Jesus grew up in Nazareth, a mountain village southwest of the Sea of Galilee.

Philip & Nathanael & Moses & Jesus & ˱of˲_Joseph

These are the names of five men.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / pastforfuture

εὑρίσκει Φίλιππος τὸν Ναθαναὴλ, καὶ λέγει

˓is˒_finding Philip ¬the Nathanael and ˱he˲_˓is˒_saying

Here John uses the present tense in past narration in order to call attention to a development in the story.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

οἱ προφῆται

the prophets

John is leaving out a word that a sentence would need in many languages to be complete. If it would be helpful in your language, you could supply this word from the context. Alternate translation: [the prophets wrote about]
