1.43 In Galilæam et invenit Philippum. Galilæa dicitur transmigratio, vel revelatio. Transmigrat enim homo de vitiis ad virtutes, et post de virtute in virtutem, et sic fit ei revelatio, ut videatur Deus deorum in Sion. Vocaturus ergo discipulum ad sequendum, id est ad imitandum exit in Galilæam, ipso loco innuens, ut sicut ipse proficiebat sapientia, et sicut per passiones intravit in gloriam, sic et sequaces.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:19-51 John’s Gospel gives limited attention to John the Baptist compared to the synoptic Gospels (Matt 3:1-6; Mark 1:2-6; Luke 1:1-24, 57-80; 3:1-13). Yet the apostle John wants us to see that John the Baptist correctly identified and exalted Jesus. John the Baptist’s disciples leave him and follow Jesus; Jesus took over the ministry John began, increasing as John decreased (John 3:30).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-time-sequential

τῇ ἐπαύριον

˱on˲_the_‹day› of_next

The next day here indicates that the events the story will now relate came after the event it has just described in the previous. If it would be helpful in your language, you could show this relationship by using a fuller phrase. Alternate translation: “The day after Andrew brought Simon to Jesus,”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / pastforfuture

καὶ εὑρίσκει Φίλιππον, καὶ λέγει

and ˱he˲_/is/_finding Philip and /is/_saying

Here John uses the present tense in past narration in order to call attention to a development in the story.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἀκολούθει μοι

/be/_following ˱after˲_me

In this context, to follow someone means to become that person’s disciple. If your readers would not understand this, you could use an equivalent idiom or use plain language. Alternate translation: “Become my disciple” or “Come, follow me as your teacher”
