1:15, he was first with respect to me: The interpretation will depend on the theological perspective of the reader. The phrase can be interpreted in a few different ways: (1) Chronological precedence: This interpretation emphasizes the aspect of time, suggesting that Jesus existed before John the Baptist. (2) Superior rank or status: Some scholars interpret this phrase to indicate that Jesus has a higher rank or status than John the Baptist. (3) Priority in function or role: Another interpretation is that Jesus has a more important function or role than John the Baptist.

1:15 he existed long before me: In a society where age was respected and honored (Lev 19:32; contrast Isa 3:5), John the Baptist emphasized Jesus’ honor by pointing to his existence even before creation (John 1:1-3).
The Word
John raises the curtain on his Gospel with a stunning description of Jesus Christ as “the Word” (Greek logos, John 1:1). Both Greek and Jewish listeners in the first century would immediately recognize the profound meaning of this title. Greeks would have thought of the seminal forces that sustain the universe. Jewish minds would have thought back to God creating the world with his word (Gen 1:3-28; Ps 33:6, 9). In Jesus’ day, the Word of God had taken on creative personal attributes. Jews viewed God’s Word as personifying divine Wisdom. Through Wisdom, God extended himself into the cosmos, creating the world (Prov 8:22-31).
John makes it clear that Jesus shares the same essence as God; the Son existed before time, and he was the agent of all creation. John anchors the divinity of Jesus in this ancient Jewish concept of Wisdom. The divine Wisdom that has existed with God from before time can now be known in Jesus Christ. In perhaps the most striking verse penned by an apostle, John writes that this Logos, this Wisdom, became flesh and lived among us as a human (John 1:14). What God is, the Logos is, and the Logos is Jesus Christ.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / pastforfuture
Ἰωάννης μαρτυρεῖ περὶ αὐτοῦ
John /is/_testifying concerning him
To call attention to a development in the story, John uses the present tense in past narration. If it would not be natural to do that in your language, you can use the past tense in your translation. Alternate translation: “John testified about him”
Note 2 topic: writing-quotations
καὶ κέκραγεν λέγων
and ˱he˲_/has/_cried_out saying
Consider natural ways of introducing direct quotations in your language. Alternate translation: “and has cried out, and he said”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes
οὗτος ἦν ὃν εἶπον, ὁ ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος, ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν, ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν.
this_‹one› was whom ˱I˲_said the_‹one› after me coming before ˱of˲_me /has/_become because before me ˱he˲_was
If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: “This was the one I said would come after me, and who would be greater than me for he was before me”
ὁ ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος
the_‹one› after me coming
Here, John is speaking about Jesus. The phrase coming after me means that John’s ministry has already started, and Jesus’ ministry will start later. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “He who starts his ministry after I have done so”
ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν
before ˱of˲_me /has/_become
Here, greater refers to being more important or having a superior position. Alternate translation: “is more important than I am” or “is superior to me”
ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν
because before me ˱he˲_was
Here, before me means that Jesus existed earlier in time than John. This does not mean that Jesus is more important because he is older than John in human years. Jesus is greater and more important than John because he is God the Son, who has always existed. Alternate translation: “for he existed before I was born”
