SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:5–25: An angel said that John the Baptizer would be born

An angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah while he was working in the temple as a priest. The angel told him that his wife Elizabeth would become pregnant and have a baby, and that he must name him John. Zechariah and Elizabeth were old, and Elizabeth was not able to have children. So Zechariah did not believe the angel. Because he did not believe that what the angel said would happen, the angel made him unable to speak. But later, Elizabeth became pregnant.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

The Birth of John the Baptist is Announced (GNT)

The angel Gabriel predicts the birth of John the Baptizer

The angel Gabriel announces/prophesies to Zechariah that his wife will have a son

Paragraph 1:8–10

This paragraph gives background information for the events in 1:11–20. These events happened in the temple of God in Jerusalem. The temple had several courtyards. The ordinary people remained in the courtyards while the priests went into the temple building to offer incense and other sacrifices. It may be helpful to have a picture of the temple and the temple courtyards here in your translation.

1:10a

And at the hour of the incense offering,

at the hour of the incense offering: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as at the hour of the incense offering refers to one of the two times during each day when a priest entered the temple alone and burned incense. One time was in the morning, and one was in the evening. The events that are described in this paragraph happened at one of these times.

In some languages it may be necessary to say who burned incense. If this is true in your language, you may be able to say:

At/during the time when Zechariah was burning incense…

1:10b

the whole congregation was praying outside.

the whole congregation: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as the whole congregation is literally “all the crowd of the people.” It refers to the crowd of people who gathered in the temple courts.

was praying: The Greek word that the BSB translates as was praying indicates that the people were speaking to God.

Some languages may use different words to refer to specific kinds of prayer, such as requests, thanks, or praise. Use a term that is natural in your language to refer to prayer in general. Avoid a term that may imply magical or meaningless words.

Some other ways to translate this are:

were talking to God

were asking/begging God

outside: The word outside refers to the area outside the temple building. The people were worshiping in one of the courtyards that were part of the temple area. The leaders did not allow the people to go into the temple building itself. Only certain priests could go there.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

πᾶν τὸ πλῆθος & τοῦ λαοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί παν τό πλῆθος ἦν τοῦ λαοῦ προσευχόμενον ἔξω τῇ ὥρᾳ τοῦ θυμιάματος)

This expression, if taken literally, could mean every single one of the Jews, but it is actually a generalization that Luke is using to emphasize how big this crowd was. Alternate translation: [A large number of people]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἔξω

outside

The word outside refers implicitly to the enclosed area or courtyard that surrounded the temple. Alternate translation: [in the courtyard outside the temple building]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τῇ ὥρᾳ τοῦ θυμιάματος

˱at˲_the hour ˱of˲_the incense

The word hour means “time.” This could mean either the morning or evening time for the incense offering. Alternate translation: [when it was time to offer the incense]
