In this section, Elizabeth gave birth to a son, and she and his father gave him the name John. John received this name at the time when he was circumcised. He was the one who was later called John the Baptizer.
It was Jewish custom to circumcise a baby boy one week after his birth. The circumcision commonly took place at the family’s home. The father or a man who specialized in doing circumcision would cut off the skin at the end of the baby’s penis. This was a sign in each boy’s body that he was part of Israel and included in the covenant that God had made with Israel. Neighbors and relatives joined in the celebration.
God had shown his power in causing Elizabeth to become pregnant when she was old and had been unable to have children. When the baby was circumcised, God again showed his power by restoring Zechariah’s ability to speak. The unusual events in connection with John’s birth were told throughout the hill country of Judah. As a result, people thought about these things and felt awe and fear to see God working in that powerful way among them.
Some other possible headings for this section are:
Elizabeth gave birth to John
Elizabeth gave birth to a baby who was circumcised and named John
The birth and circumcision of John the Baptizer
Her neighbors and relatives heard
Her neighbors and relatives/kinsfolk heard
When her/Elizabeth’s family and neighbors were told
Those who lived near her and those in her clan heard/learned
neighbors: The Greek word that the BSB translates as neighbors refers to people who knew Elizabeth and Zechariah and lived close to them.
relatives: The word relatives means “kinsmen” or “family members.” It refers to people in the extended or larger family of Elizabeth and Zechariah. Some may have lived a long distance away. This is the same word as in 1:36a.
heard: The Greek word that the BSB translates as heard is the common word for “to hear.” But in this context it also implies that they had received news or learned new information.
that the Lord had shown her great mercy,
the news that the Lord had been very merciful to her,
about this great kindness that the Lord had done for her,
how, in his great mercy/compassion, the Lord had given her a son,
the Lord had shown her great mercy: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as had shown her great mercy is an idiom that is literally “made-great his mercy with her.” It indicates that the Lord had expressed great compassion to her in her need. Elizabeth had suffered because she was not able to have children. God showed his compassion to her by making her able to have a child in her old age.
Some other ways to translate this are:
the Lord had caused his mercy to be great
the Lord had been very kind to her (GW)
the Lord had treated her very mercifully/compassionately
Lord: Here the word Lord refers to God. See Lord, Context 2, in the Glossary.
and they rejoiced with her.
and they rejoiced with her.
they were happy with/for her.
and they celebrated the birth with her.
they rejoiced with her: The Greek expression that the BSB translates as they rejoiced with her means that the neighbors and relatives were happy because of what the Lord had done for Elizabeth, and because she was happy.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
ἐμεγάλυνεν & τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτῆς
magnified & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἤκουσαν οἱ περίοικοι καί οἱ συγγενεῖς αὐτῆς ὅτι ἐμεγάλυνεν Κύριος τό ἔλεος αὐτοῦ μετʼ αὐτῆς καί συνέχαιρον αὐτῇ)
Luke speaks as if God had made his mercy bigger towards Elizabeth. Alternate translation: [had shown great kindness to her]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἐμεγάλυνεν & τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτῆς
magnified & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἤκουσαν οἱ περίοικοι καί οἱ συγγενεῖς αὐτῆς ὅτι ἐμεγάλυνεν Κύριος τό ἔλεος αὐτοῦ μετʼ αὐτῆς καί συνέχαιρον αὐτῇ)
The implication is that God’s great kindness to Elizabeth was to enable her to have a baby. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [had shown great kindness to her by enabling her to have a baby]
