UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-quotations

כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה

thus he/it_had_said YHWH

The phrase Thus says Yahweh of Armies introduces a direct quotation from Yahweh. In your translation, use a natural way of introducing direct quotations in your language.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה שַׁ֚בְתִּי אֶל צִיּ֔וֹן

thus he/it_had_said YHWH return to/towards Tsiyyōn/(Zion)

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. In this verse, Zechariah is quoting what Yahweh says directly. Alternate translation: [Yahweh will return to Zion]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְנִקְרְאָ֤ה

(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH return to/towards Tsiyyōn/(Zion) and,I_will_dwell in_the=middle Yərūshālam/(Jerusalem) and,it_will_be_called Yerushalayim (a)_city of_(the),faithfulness and,the_mountain_of YHWH armies/messengers mountain_of of_(the),holiness )

The expression Jerusalem will be called is a passive verbal form. If it would be unnatural to use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [and people will call Jerusalem]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

וְהַר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת

and,the_mountain_of YHWH armies/messengers

Yahweh is speaking of himself in the third person as Yahweh of Armies. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this in the first person. Alternate translation: [and my mountain]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְנִקְרְאָ֤ה & עִ֣יר הָֽאֱמֶ֔ת

(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH return to/towards Tsiyyōn/(Zion) and,I_will_dwell in_the=middle Yərūshālam/(Jerusalem) and,it_will_be_called Yerushalayim (a)_city of_(the),faithfulness and,the_mountain_of YHWH armies/messengers mountain_of of_(the),holiness )

Yahweh is using the possessive form to describe a city of faithfulness that is characterized by faithfulness. If a speaker of your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could express this idea in another way. Alternate translation: [the faithful city]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

הָֽאֱמֶ֔ת

of_(the),faithfulness

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of faithfulness, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [where people are faithful]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְהַר־יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת

and,the_mountain_of YHWH armies/messengers

Yahweh assumes that readers will know that the mountain of Yahweh of hosts refers to Mount Zion. You could say that explicitly if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [and Mount Zion]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

צְבָא֖וֹת הַ֥ר

armies/messengers mountain_of

Yahweh is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [Armies will be called the mountain of]

Note 9 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

הַ֥ר הַקֹּֽדֶשׁ

mountain_of (Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH return to/towards Tsiyyōn/(Zion) and,I_will_dwell in_the=middle Yərūshālam/(Jerusalem) and,it_will_be_called Yerushalayim (a)_city of_(the),faithfulness and,the_mountain_of YHWH armies/messengers mountain_of of_(the),holiness )

Yahweh is using the possessive form to describe the mountain of holiness as a mountain that is characterized by holiness. If a speaker of your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could express this idea in another way. Alternate translation: [the holy mountain]
