This is still a very early look into the unfinished text of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check the text in advance before using in public.
2 Then David said to gather the foreigners who lived in Israel, and he assigned them the job of hewing out cut stones to build the residence for God. 3 He prepared a large quantity of iron for the door hinges and fittings, so much brass that it couldn’t be weighed, 4 and innumerable cedar logs that the Tsidonians and the Tsorians (Sidonians and Tyrians) brought in for David. 5 David said, “My son Shelomoh (Solomon) is young and tender, and the house to be built for Yahweh must be impressive for the sake of his reputation and for beauty in all the lands so I’ll prepare for it now.” So David prepared a large amount before he died.
6 Then David called for his son Shelomoh (Solomon), and ordered him to build a residence for Yisrael’s God Yahweh. 7 David told him, “My son, I wanted to build a temple to honour my God Yahweh,[ref] 8 but Yahweh gave me this message, ‘You’ve fought a lot of battles and shed a large amount of blood, so you won’t be the one who’ll build a residence to honour me—you’ve shed too much blood on the ground in my sight.’ 9 He told me, ‘Listen, you’ll have a son who’ll be a man of peace. I’ll give him relief from all his enemies from the surrounding regions. That’s why he’ll be called ‘Shelomoh’ (which sounds like ‘Shalom’—the Hebrew word for peace), and I’ll give peace and quietness to Yisrael during his lifetime. 10 He’ll be the one to build a residence for me, and he himself will become my son, and I’ll become his father, and I’ll establish the throne of his kingdom over Yisrael forever.’
11 “Now, my son, may Yahweh be with you, and may you be successful and build a residence for Yahweh your God, just as he said you would. 12 I also ask Yahweh to give you insight and understanding, and give you charge over Yisrael so that you can keep your God Yahweh’s regulations. 13 Then you’ll succeed, if you are careful to follow the instructions and the directions that Yahweh commanded Mosheh (Moses) concerning Yisrael. Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or discouraged.[ref]
14 Now, see, despite many battles, I’ve prepared the following for Yahweh’s residence: three thousand tonnes of gold and thirty thousand tonnes of silver, along with too much bronze and iron to weigh, and timber and cut stones. Plus you’ll be able to add more. 15 You’ll have plenty of skilled workers including those who work with stone and those who work with wood. 16 Then there’s so many skilled with gold and silver, and bronze and iron. So get organised and get started, and may Yahweh be with you.
17 Then David ordered all the Israeli officials to assist his son Shelomoh, saying, 18 “Isn’t Yahweh your God with you all, and hasn’t he given peace to you all from all around, because he’s allowed me to take control of this region, and this area has been subdued with the help of Yahweh and his people. 19 Now, dedicate your mind and strength to request advice from your God Yahweh, then get organised and build the sanctuary of Yahweh God so you can bring the box containing Yahweh’s agreement to the residence to be built to honour Yahweh’s name, and bring God’s sacred items.”
23 By then David was old and coming to the end of his life, and he made his son Shelomoh (Solomon) king over Yisrael.[ref]
2Sam 7:1-16:
7 Then the king moved into his palace, and Yahweh allowed him to have a time of peace from all his enemies. 2 One day the king said to the prophet Natan, “Look, I’m here living in a house made of cedar, but God’s box is still there in a tent.”
3 “Go and do whatever you consider best,” Natan replied, “because Yahweh is with you.” 4 But that night, Yahweh spoke to Natan, 5 “Go and tell my servant David that Yahweh says, ‘Will you build a house for me to live in? 6 I haven’t lived in a house since I brought the Israelis out of Egypt right up until now, but rather I was living in a tent as they moved around. 7 In all those places, I never once queried the leaders to ask why they never built a cedar house for me.’
8 “But now you should tell my servant David that commander Yahweh says, ‘I myself took you out of the grass field where you looked after the sheep and goats to become the leader of my people the Israelis. 9 Everywhere you’ve gone, I’ve been with you and destroyed your enemies in front of you, and I will make you famous like all the famous people on the earth. 10 I will establish a place for the Israelis and put them there to live, and they won’t be afraid because evil people won’t continue to oppress them like happened in the past 11 when I appointed heroes (traditionally ‘judges’) over my people Yisrael. I will give you peace from all your enemies, and I, Yahweh, will enable your descendants to rule after you. 12 when your time on earth comes to an end and you’re laid down with your ancestors, I will appoint one of your sons to be king and I will establish his kingdom.[ref] 13 He’s the one who’ll build a temple for me, and I will make his descendents reign forever. 14 I myself will become like a father to him, and he’ll become like a son to me. When he disobeys, I’ll punish him like fathers punish their sons.[ref] 15 But my kindness won’t turn away from you like I turned away from Sha’ul—the one who I removed ahead of you. 16 Your descendants and your kingdom will remain forever. Your throne will be established forever.’ ”[ref]
1Ch 17:1-14:
17 After a while when David was living in his house, he said to the prophet Natan, “Look, here I am living in a palace made of cedar, but the box containing Yahweh’s agreement is kept in a tent.” 2 “Go add and do what you’re planning,” Natan replied, “because God is with you.”
3 But that night God spoke to Natan, 4 “Go and tell my servant David that Yahweh says this: You yourself won’t be the one to build a residence for me to live in, 5 because I haven’t lived in a building from the day that I brought Yisrael out of Egypt until today—I’ve moved from place to place and tent to tent. 6 As I travelled with all the Israelis, did I ever complain to any of Yisrael’s leaders who I’d commanded to shepherd my people, and ask them, ‘Why haven’t you all built a house of cedar for me?’ ”
7 “So now you should tell my servant David that army commander Yahweh says this: I myself took you from the pasture, from behind the sheep, to be a leader over my people Yisrael. 8 I’ve always been with you wherever you’ve gone, and I’ve defeated all your enemies who were attacking you, and I’ll make you famous like some of the greatest people in the world. 9 I’ll set a place for my people Yisrael, and I’ll plant them, and they’ll settle in that place and not need to be fearful again. Violent groups won’t continue to trouble them like they’ve done before, 10 and ever since the time that I put heroes and leaders over my people Yisrael. Then I’ll humble all your enemies. In addition, I declare to you that Yahweh will build a dynasty for you. 11 When your time on earth is up and it’s time to join your deceased ancestors, then I’ll raise up one of your sons and establish his kingdom. 12 He’ll be the one to build a temple for me and establish a dynasty that will last forever. 13 I myself will be a father to him, and he’ll be a son to me, and I won’t cease my loyal commitment to him like I ended it with your predecessor.[ref] 14 I’ll confirm his rule over my temple and my kingdom forever, and his ruling dynasty will last forever.”
Josh 1:6-9:
6 Be strong and be courageous, for you yourself will lead these people to inherit the land that I promised their ancestors that I’d give to them.[ref] 7 Just be strong and very courageous—making sure that you obey everything that my servant Mosheh instructed you. Don’t turn away to the right or to the left from it, so that you’ll be wise in every situation that you end up in. 8 That book of the law must always be on your lips and you should meditate on it day and night, so that you’ll be careful to follow everything that’s written in it, because then you’ll make your ways prosperous and then you’ll be wise. 9 Didn’t I order you to be strong and courageous? Don’t tremble or be discouraged because your God Yahweh will be with you wherever you go.”
1:6: Deu 31:6-7,23.
1Ki 1:1-40:
1 Now King David had become very old, and he couldn’t keep warm even when covered with blankets, 2 so his servants suggested, “Allow us search for a young woman who can wait on you and take care of your needs. She can sleep beside you and keep our master, the king, warm.” 3 So they searched throughout Yisrael and found a beautiful young woman called Avishag (a Shunammite) and brought her to the king. 4 She was incredibly beautiful and she took care of the king, but he didn’t have sexual relations with her.
5 Then David and Haggit’s son Adoniyyah promoted himself saying, “I, myself, will reign.” He acquired a chariot and horsemen and fifty men who ran along in front.[ref] 6 Haggit had given birth to him after Avshalom. He was a good-looker, but his father had never disciplined him or ever asked, “Why did you do that?” 7 He had spoken with Tseruyah’s son Yoav and the priest Evyatar and they had both agreed to support him. 8 But the priest Tsadok and Yehoyada’s son Benayah, the prophet Natan, Shimei and Rei, and David’s top warriors were all against Adoniyyah.
9 Then Adoniyyah sacrificed sheep and cattle and fattened calves near the Zohelet stone (which is beside Eyn-Rogel), and he invited all his brothers (the king’s sons), and all the men of Yehudah including the king’s servants. 10 However, he didn’t invite the prophet Natan, Benayah, the top warriors, or his brother Shelomoh.
11 Then Natan asked Shelomoh’s mother Batsheva, “Haven’t you heard that Haggit’s son Adoniyyah has made himself king, and our master David doesn’t even realise?[ref] 12 So please let me advise you now so that you can save your own life and that of your son Shelomoh (Solomon). 13 Go and ask King David, ‘My master the king, didn’t you promise your female servant, saying, “Surely your son Shelomoh will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne?” So why has Adoniyyah become king?’ 14 Then while you’re still there talking to the king, I’ll come in behind you and confirm what you said.”
15 So Batsheva went to the king’s bedroom where Avishag (the Shunammite) was attending him in his old age. 16 Batsheva bowed low to show respect to the king, and he asked her what she wanted.
17 “My master,” she replied, “you yourself promised to your female servant in front of your God Yahweh that your son Shelomoh would be the one to reign after you and sit on your throne. 18 But now, listen, Adoniyyah has become king instead, and you haven’t even been told about it. 19 He’s sacrificing many oxen and calves and sheep, and he invited the priest Evyatar, and Yoav the commander of the army, and all your sons except for your servant Shelomoh. 20 So now everyone’s waiting to see what you’ll do, my master the king. They want you to make it clearly known who’ll be the king on the throne after you. 21 Otherwise, as soon as my master the king passes on to join his ancestors, my son Shelomoh and I will be considered to be ‘in the way’.”
22 Just then, while she was still talking with the king, the prophet Natan appeared 23 and his arrival was announced to the king. He went into the room and knelt in front of the king and bowed his face to the floor. 24 Then he asked, “My master the king, did you announce that Adoniyyah will reign after you and sit on your throne? 25 I ask because today he sacrificed plenty of oxen and calves and sheep. He’d invited all your sons and army commanders, and Evyatar the priest. They’re all eating and drinking with him and saying, ‘Long live King Adoniyyah!’ 26 But as for me, I’m your servant, and nor did he invite Tsadok the priest or Yehoyada’s son Benayah, or Shelomoh your servant. 27 Did my master the king organise that without telling your servants who will sit on the throne of my master the king after him?”
28 Then King David said, “Call Batsheva back in.” So she came back into the king’s room and stood in front of him. 29 Then the king promised, “As Yahweh lives and has rescued me from every danger, 30 I promise you in front of Yisrael’s God Yahweh that your son Shelomoh will reign after me and will sit on my throne in my place. I’ll put it in action today.”
31 Batsheva knelt down and bowed her face to the floor and said, “May my master, the king David live forever.”
32 Then King David called out, “Summon Tsadok the priest for me, and Natan the prophet, and Yehoyada’s son Benayah.” So they came into the king’s room. 33 “Take some of my servants,” the king instructed them. “and put my son Shelomoh on my mule and lead him to the Gihon Spring. 34 Then you two, Tsadok and Natan, must anoint him there as king over Yisrael. Then blow the horn and shout, ‘Let King Shelomoh live!’ 35 Then follow him back here where he must come and sit on my throne. Then he’ll reign in my place as ruler of Yisrael and Yehudah.”
36 “Certainly,” Benayah replied. “Just as Yahweh, the God of my master the king has instructed. 37 Just as Yahweh has been with my master the king, so may he be with Shelomoh. And may his rule be even greater than that of my master, the king David.”
38 So Tsadok the priest and Natan the prophet and Yehoyada’s son Benayah and the kings bodyguards went and put Shelomoh on the king’s mule, and took him to Gihon. 39 Tsadok the priest took the horn of oil from the sacred tent and anointed Shelomoh with it, and they blew the horn and all the people shouted, “Let King Shelomoh live!” 40 Then all the people followed him back uphill to the city, and the people were playing flutes and were so exuberant in their celebrations that the ground shook with the noise.
