TSNTyndale Study Notes:

17:13 The Chronicler made this declaration about Solomon in particular (see 22:9; 28:5-6; cp. 2 Sam 7:14).

TTNTyndale Theme Notes:

The Promise of Dynasty

God promised David that his dynasty would last forever (2 Sam 7:11-16 // 1 Chr 17:9-14). Yet the Chronicler lived at a time when David’s dynasty had apparently ended. Although David’s line of descent continued (see 1 Chr 3:1-24), no descendant of David had been king since the exile of Judah to Babylon over 150 years earlier. As a result, Israel’s hope for the future was in question. The Chronicler wanted to show that God’s promise to David was unconditional and that his throne was indeed “secure forever.” Even the possibility of exile does not remove the hope of God’s promise of a dynasty. The promise would continue for a future time because a future descendant of David would inherit the throne (17:11).

The Chronicler’s hope was not directly “messianic” in the strict sense—he was not primarily focused on the arising of an anointed deliverer. His continuing hope was that the covenant community would again be led by kings descended from David. The Chronicler encouraged the community to look to the future for a new king to improve Israel’s condition.

With the birth of Jesus, the Son of David, the Chronicler’s hope for the community of Israel was finally realized. Jesus is the fulfillment of the Chronicler’s expectation of a new king (see Matt 1:1-17). His Kingdom is for all the nations (Isa 49:6), stretching “from sea to sea and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth” (Zech 9:10).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Connecting Statement:

Connecting Statement:

Yahweh continues describing his promises to King David through the prophet Nathan.

(Occurrence 0) I will be a father to him, and he will be my son

(Some words not found in UHB: I be for=him/it as,father and=he will_belong to/for=me as,son and,steadfast_love,my not remove from,with,him just=as took from,who it_became from,predecessor,you )

The prophecy in 17:11–14 refers to Solomon, David’s son. But, aspects of the prophecy will be fulfilled by Jesus. So, here it is best to translate the words “father” and “son” with your normal words for a biological father and son.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

(Occurrence 0) I will not take my covenant faithfulness away from him, as I took it from Saul

(Some words not found in UHB: I be for=him/it as,father and=he will_belong to/for=me as,son and,steadfast_love,my not remove from,with,him just=as took from,who it_became from,predecessor,you )

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word faithfulness, you can express the same idea with a verbal form such as “faithfully.” Alternate translation: “I will never stop faithfully loving him, as I stopped loving Saul”
