In Nathan’s culture, when people prostrated themselves to someone else, they were honoring respecting that person. The author describes how Nathan’s nostrils were toward the ground to indicate that Nathan prostrated himself on the ground, which was a way to show even more honor or respect. Alternate translation: “and he prostrated himself to the king in deep respect, with his nose touching the ground” or “and Nathan, to honor the king greatly, prostrated himself upon the ground”
