Section 10:1–11:1: Avoid idolatry completely

Paul addressed believers who thought it was acceptable to eat meals in an idol’s temple. First he warned them (10:1–13). He used examples from the Old Testament to show them their danger. Then he commanded them (10:14–22). He said that no one can take part in both the Lord’s Supper and idol feasts. He said that believers are free to eat meat sold in the market place unless this will hurt someone else’s conscience (10:23–30). In summary, he said that believers should control their behavior in two ways. They should praise God in everything they do, and they should not allow their actions to harm another person (10:31–11:1).

Paragraph 10:1–5

Paul gave an example of the Hebrew ancestors. They had many spiritual blessings, but they were tempted by idolatry. Because of this, they died in the wilderness.

10:2

They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea: This is a metaphor. Paul compared the experience of the Hebrew people to baptism. In some languages it may be good to make it clear that this is a comparison.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

it was like they were baptized into Moses by the cloud and the sea

as we are baptized when we become followers of Jesus, so they were baptized in the cloud and the sea and became followers of Moses

baptized into Moses: There are two ways to interpret this figure of speech:

  1. It means that the Hebrew people became followers or disciples of Moses. For example:

    This was like being baptized and becoming followers of Moses (CEV) (CEV, NCV, NLT, GNT)

  2. It means that the Hebrew people joined into union or fellowship with Moses. For example:

    they were all united with Moses by baptism (GW) (GW, REB)

It is not clear which Paul meant. If you must decide it is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), which is recommended by some commentaries.Thiselton is among those who support this interpretation. Paul was thinking of the phrase “baptized into Christ” (see Romans 6:3). It may be possible to use a similar expression here.

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form here to focus on those who are baptized rather than focusing on the person doing the “baptizing.” If you must state who does the action, Paul implies that “God” or an unknown person does it. Alternate translation: [they all experienced baptism into Moses] or [God baptized them all into Moses]

Here, baptized into identifies the person with whom one is united in baptism. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express baptized into by clarifying the idea by using language of union or relationship. Alternate translation: [they all were baptized so that they followed Moses] or [they all were baptized into relationship with Moses]

Here Paul speaks as if the Israelites had been baptized, just like believers in Jesus are baptized. By this, he does not mean that the Israelites had a different savior, Moses. Rather, he wants to connect the Israelites and the Corinthians, and one way to do that is to connect their leaders (Moses and Jesus). If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind baptized into Mosesby using an analogy or indicating that Paul is speaking. Since Paul’s point is to connect the ideas in this verse to “baptism into Jesus,” preserve the metaphor here. Alternate translation: [they all were baptized, so to speak, into Moses]
