SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–11:1: Avoid idolatry completely

Paul addressed believers who thought it was acceptable to eat meals in an idol’s temple. First he warned them (10:1–13). He used examples from the Old Testament to show them their danger. Then he commanded them (10:14–22). He said that no one can take part in both the Lord’s Supper and idol feasts. He said that believers are free to eat meat sold in the market place unless this will hurt someone else’s conscience (10:23–30). In summary, he said that believers should control their behavior in two ways. They should praise God in everything they do, and they should not allow their actions to harm another person (10:31–11:1).

Here are some other possible section headings:

Don’t worship idols

Do everything for the glory of God

Paragraph 10:23–11:1

Paul discussed whether believers can eat food that pagans offered to idols and later sold in the marketplace. He said that believers must consider not only their own freedom and rights. They must also consider the good of others, and how their actions will help non-believers to be saved.

10:32a

Do not become a stumbling block,

Do not become a stumbling block: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Do not become a stumbling block is more literally “be blameless.” The BSB uses a figure of speech to express the meaning. Paul said that the Corinthians should not cause people to sin. They should not discourage anybody from following the way of Christ.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

10:32b

whether to Jews or Greeks

whether to Jews or Greeks: The word Greeks is used for people who are not Jewish. See also 1:22–24. Here is another way to translate this:

Gentiles (GNT)

10:32c

or the church of God—

or the church of God: The phrase the church of God refers to the people who belong to God. This same phrase appears in 1:2a, and you should translate it here as you did there.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἀπρόσκοποι καὶ Ἰουδαίοις γίνεσθε, καὶ Ἕλλησιν, καὶ τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀπρόσκοποι καί Ἰουδαίοις γίνεσθε καί Ἕλλησιν καί τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind offense, you can express the idea by using a verb such as “offend.” Alternate translation: [Do not offend either Jews or Greeks or the church of God]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

καὶ Ἰουδαίοις & καὶ Ἕλλησιν, καὶ τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀπρόσκοποι καί Ἰουδαίοις γίνεσθε καί Ἕλλησιν καί τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ)

Here the three groups to which Paul refers would include every person in Paul’s context. The Jews are those who practice Jewish customs and faith, while the church of God refers to everyone who believes in Jesus the Messiah. The word Greeks includes everyone else. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express these three groups and think that Paul is leaving some people out by clarifying that Paul includes everyone. Alternate translation: [to anyone, whether Jews or Greeks or the church of God]
