Section 10:1–11:1: Avoid idolatry completely

Paul addressed believers who thought it was acceptable to eat meals in an idol’s temple. First he warned them (10:1–13). He used examples from the Old Testament to show them their danger. Then he commanded them (10:14–22). He said that no one can take part in both the Lord’s Supper and idol feasts. He said that believers are free to eat meat sold in the market place unless this will hurt someone else’s conscience (10:23–30). In summary, he said that believers should control their behavior in two ways. They should praise God in everything they do, and they should not allow their actions to harm another person (10:31–11:1).

Paul gave examples from the Hebrew Scriptures to warn the believers. He emphasized that it is dangerous to honor false gods and to commit sexual immorality.

These things took place as examples

In Greek, this verse part begins with a Greek conjunction that is often translated as “but.” Here this word introduces an explanation of the events that Paul has just mentioned. Many English versions, like the BSB, do not use any word here. Some English translations, such as the NIV, ESV, and RSV, use the word “Now.” Introduce this explanation in a way that is natural in your language.

These things took place as examples: The events that Paul mentioned in 10:5 are examples or warnings. The events are not described in 10:5. Instead Paul described them in detail in 10:7–10.

to keep us from craving evil things as they did: This is a negative purpose statement. God allowed these things to happen for a purpose. He wanted to warn his people not to desire evil things.
