OET (OET-LV)But that what they_are_sacrificing the pagans, to_demons and not to_god are_sacrificing, not and I_am_wanting you_all partners the with_demons to_be_becoming.

OET (OET-RV)No, but the sacrifices of the pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I don’t want you all to be partners with demons.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–11:1: Avoid idolatry completely

Paul addressed believers who thought it was acceptable to eat meals in an idol’s temple. First he warned them (10:1–13). He used examples from the Old Testament to show them their danger. Then he commanded them (10:14–22). He said that no one can take part in both the Lord’s Supper and idol feasts. He said that believers are free to eat meat sold in the market place unless this will hurt someone else’s conscience (10:23–30). In summary, he said that believers should control their behavior in two ways. They should praise God in everything they do, and they should not allow their actions to harm another person (10:31–11:1).

Here are some other possible section headings:

Don’t worship idols

Do everything for the glory of God

Paragraph 10:14–22

Paul forbade believers from having anything to do with idolatry. Demons control idol worship, and anyone who shares in the Lord’s Supper cannot also take part in a feast that honors demons. That will cause the Lord to be angry, and no one should risk testing him in that way.

10:20a

No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God.

No: Paul answered his own rhetorical question. If you translated the previous question as a negative statement, you will probably not need to translate this explicitly.

Here are some other ways to translate Paul’s answer:

But what I am saying is this:

Instead, I mean that…

but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God: The word offered is in the passive.

Here are two ways to translate this phrase:

the sacrifices of pagans: The Greek word that the BSB translates as the sacrifices of pagans is a verb meaning “they sacrifice.”Some Greek manuscripts read “the nations sacrifice.” However, the 4th edition of the UBS Greek NT chose the reading “they sacrifice.” The editors give this a C rating, indicating that they “had difficulty in deciding which variant to place in the text.” The BSB has supplied the word pagans to make the meaning clear.

Here is another way to translate this phrase:

the sacrifices that they/people make

demons: A “demon” is an evil spirit. You should translate this the same way that you did in passages such as Matthew 7:22 or Mark 1:34. See also the article in KBT about “Evil Spirit, Unclean Spirit, Demon.”

10:20b

And I do not want you to be participants with demons.

And I do not want you to be participants with demons: The phrase I do not want in this context indicates disapproval. Paul said that he disapproved of believers sharing in fellowship with demons by eating idol food.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

I don’t want you(plur) to have anything to do with demons.

You(plur) should not share anything with demons.

participants with demons: See the note on “participate in the altar” in 10:18b. Try to use a similar phrase here so that your readers will understand the connection and the contrast.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

ἀλλ’ ὅτι

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀλλʼ ὅτι ἅ θύουσιν τά ἔθνη δαιμονίοις καί οὒ Θεῷ θύουσιν οὒ θέλω δέ ὑμᾶς κοινωνούς τῶν δαιμονίων γίνεσθαι)

Here Paul omits some words that may be required in your language to make a full sentence. If your language needs these words, you could supply some from the previous verse ([10:19](../10/19.md)). Alternate translation: [Rather, I am saying that]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

ὅτι ἃ θύουσιν τὰ ἔθνη & θύουσιν

that (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀλλʼ ὅτι ἅ θύουσιν τά ἔθνη δαιμονίοις καί οὒ Θεῷ θύουσιν οὒ θέλω δέ ὑμᾶς κοινωνούς τῶν δαιμονίων γίνεσθαι)

Here Paul states the object before the verb. If your language would always put the object after the verb, you could rearrange this clause. Alternate translation: [that the Gentiles sacrifice what they sacrifice]

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

δὲ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀλλʼ ὅτι ἅ θύουσιν τά ἔθνη δαιμονίοις καί οὒ Θεῷ θύουσιν οὒ θέλω δέ ὑμᾶς κοινωνούς τῶν δαιμονίων γίνεσθαι)

Here, But introduces a development in the argument. It does not introduce a strong contrast. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express But with a word or phrase that introduces the next step in an argument. Alternate translation: [Now]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

κοινωνοὺς τῶν δαιμονίων

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀλλʼ ὅτι ἅ θύουσιν τά ἔθνη δαιμονίοις καί οὒ Θεῷ θύουσιν οὒ θέλω δέ ὑμᾶς κοινωνούς τῶν δαιμονίων γίνεσθαι)

Here Paul uses the possessive form to describe partakers who “partake in” the demons. This could refer primarily to: (1) “partaking” in or joining in union with the demons. Alternate translation: [partaking in the demons] (2) being joined together with nonbelievers, which comes from “partaking” in the demons. Alternate translation: [partaking in fellowship based on the demons]

OET (OET-RV)No, but the sacrifices of the pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I don’t want you all to be partners with demons.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
