SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–11:1: Avoid idolatry completely

Paul addressed believers who thought it was acceptable to eat meals in an idol’s temple. First he warned them (10:1–13). He used examples from the Old Testament to show them their danger. Then he commanded them (10:14–22). He said that no one can take part in both the Lord’s Supper and idol feasts. He said that believers are free to eat meat sold in the market place unless this will hurt someone else’s conscience (10:23–30). In summary, he said that believers should control their behavior in two ways. They should praise God in everything they do, and they should not allow their actions to harm another person (10:31–11:1).

Here are some other possible section headings:

Don’t worship idols

Do everything for the glory of God

Paragraph 10:14–22

Paul forbade believers from having anything to do with idolatry. Demons control idol worship, and anyone who shares in the Lord’s Supper cannot also take part in a feast that honors demons. That will cause the Lord to be angry, and no one should risk testing him in that way.

10:21a

You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too;

You cannot drink: The phrase You cannot drink, indicates that it is wrong to do this. But it is also a warning. If a person unites himself to demons, then he is not united to the Lord.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

you must not drink

it is not right to drink

the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too: The cup of the Lord refers to the cup of wine that Christians drink at communion. It is dedicated to the Lord. Drinking it brings the believer into fellowship with the Lord.

The cup of demons refers to the cup of wine that pagans drink at their meals honoring idols. This wine is dedicated to these idols. These idols represent demons. So, when people drink in their honor, they honor the demons and enter into fellowship with the demons.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

You cannot drink the wine that belongs to the Lord and also the wine that belongs to demons

You cannot drink wine at the Lord’s Supper and also drink wine dedicated to demons

10:21b

you cannot partake in the table of the Lord and the table of demons too.

you cannot partake in the table of the Lord and the table of demons too: The table of the Lord refers to the communion meal. When believers ate the communion meal, it was to honor the Lord and to have fellowship with him. The table of demons refers to a meal in an idol’s temple.

Here is another way to translate this clause:

You cannot eat at the Lord’s Supper and also eat food that has been dedicated to demons

General Comment on 10:21a-b

Some translators choose to mention the demons first. For example:

It is not possible to join in eating and drinking what has been offered to demons and also join in eating and drinking the Lord’s Supper.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

οὐ δύνασθε & πίνειν & οὐ δύνασθε τραπέζης & μετέχειν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ δύνασθε ποτήριον Κυρίου πίνειν καί ποτήριον δαιμονίων Οὒ δύνασθε τραπέζης Κυρίου μετέχειν καί τραπέζης δαιμονίων)

Here Paul states that they are not able to do both of these things even though he knows that they can physically do both of these things. The Corinthians would have understood him to mean that it is shocking and unthinkable to do both of these things. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind You are not ablewith a strong command or a statement of how bad doing both these things would be. Alternate translation: [You should never drink … You should never partake of the table] or [It is very wrong to drink … It is very wrong to partake of the table]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence -1) ποτήριον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ δύνασθε ποτήριον Κυρίου πίνειν καί ποτήριον δαιμονίων Οὒ δύνασθε τραπέζης Κυρίου μετέχειν καί τραπέζης δαιμονίων)

Here the Corinthians would have understood cup to refer to the drink inside the cup, which in Paul’s culture would have been wine. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express cup by more explicitly referring to what would be in the cup. Alternate translation: [the drink … the drink] or [the wine in the cup … the wine in the cup]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

ποτήριον Κυρίου & ποτήριον δαιμονίων & τραπέζης Κυρίου & τραπέζης δαιμονίων.

˓the˒_cup ˱of˲_˓the˒_Lord & ˓the˒_cup ˱of˲_demons & ˱of˲_˓the˒_table ˱of˲_˓the˒_Lord & ˱of˲_˓the˒_table ˱of˲_demons

Here Paul uses the possessive form to describe “cups” and “tables” that are associated with the Lord or with demons. The cup and the table would be used in ceremonies or worship connected to either the Lord or the demons. If your language does not use the possessive form to express that idea, you can state it in another way. Alternate translation: [the cup used to worship the Lord … the cup used to worship demons … of the table used to worship the Lord … of the table used to worship demons]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence -1) τραπέζης

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ δύνασθε ποτήριον Κυρίου πίνειν καί ποτήριον δαιμονίων Οὒ δύνασθε τραπέζης Κυρίου μετέχειν καί τραπέζης δαιμονίων)

Here the Corinthians would have understood table to refer to the food on the table. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express table by more explicitly referring to what would be on the table. Alternate translation: [of the bread … of the bread] or [of the food on the table … of the food on the table]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

10:21 Believers should avoid participating in religious meals eaten in a pagan temple (see 8:10), because those united to the Lord (Christ) cannot simultaneously be united to demons (see 2 Cor 6:14-16).
