OET (OET-LV)Therefore whether you_all_are_eating, or you_all_are_drinking, or anything you_all_are_doing, all things to glory of_god be_doing.

OET (OET-RV)So whether you’re eating or drinking or doing whatever, always ensure that God gets honoured.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–11:1: Avoid idolatry completely

Paul addressed believers who thought it was acceptable to eat meals in an idol’s temple. First he warned them (10:1–13). He used examples from the Old Testament to show them their danger. Then he commanded them (10:14–22). He said that no one can take part in both the Lord’s Supper and idol feasts. He said that believers are free to eat meat sold in the market place unless this will hurt someone else’s conscience (10:23–30). In summary, he said that believers should control their behavior in two ways. They should praise God in everything they do, and they should not allow their actions to harm another person (10:31–11:1).

Here are some other possible section headings:

Don’t worship idols

Do everything for the glory of God

Paragraph 10:23–11:1

Paul discussed whether believers can eat food that pagans offered to idols and later sold in the marketplace. He said that believers must consider not only their own freedom and rights. They must also consider the good of others, and how their actions will help non-believers to be saved.

10:31a

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do,

So: The Greek word that the BSB translates as So introduces Paul’s command. This concludes and summarizes what he said in chapters 8–10.

Here is another way to translate this word:

In conclusion

whether you eat or drink: The words whether you eat…drink refer to eating meals, and deciding what to eat and what not to eat.

or: The three verbs “eat…drink…do…” are connected with a conjunction that the BSB translates as or. In some languages it may be more natural to use a conjunction meaning “and.”

or whatever you do: The phrase whatever you do refers to all the activities of life, and how one lives in this world.

10:31b

do it all to the glory of God.

do it all to the glory of God: This clause indicates that believers should live their whole life with the purpose of honoring God.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

do everything to cause people to praise God

always do it so that God is famous/big/lifted up

General Comment on 10:31a-b

This verse gives Paul’s general principle for how to live in this world. His main point is in 10:31b. 10:31b is the central and key command for chapters 8–10. In some languages it may be natural to show that this is the most important thought by placing it first in the sentence. For example:

31bDo everything for the glory of God: 31aeating, drinking, and anything else.

31bAct in every way for the glory of God 31ano matter what you(plur) do, even when you are eating and drinking.

οὖν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἴτε Οὖν ἐσθίετε εἴτε πίνετε εἴτε τὶ ποιεῖτε παντᾶ εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ ποιεῖτε)

Here, Therefore introduces the conclusion of what Paul has argued in [8:1–10:30](../08/01.md). If you have a way to introduce the conclusion to an entire section, you could use it here. Alternate translation: [In conclusion]

Paul is speaking as if “eating,” “drinking,” and “doing” things were hypothetical possibilities, but he means that the Corinthians will do these things. If your language does not state something as a possibility if it is certain or true and if your readers might think that what Paul is saying is not certain, then you could translate his words as an affirmative statement. Alternate translation: [when you eat or drink, or when you do anything]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ

to glory ˱of˲_God

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind glory, you can express the idea by using a verb such as “glorify.” Alternate translation: [to glorify God]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

10:31-33 Paul concludes his discussion by summarizing the two principles that are to guide Christian behavior in issues like this: (1) Believers are to do everything for the glory of God (see Col 3:17; 1 Pet 4:11); (2) believers are not to give offense and should avoid doing anything that would harm another person’s Christian faith (cp. 1 Cor 8:9, 13; 1 Jn 2:10). Christians’ behavior is to be guided by what is best for others rather than by personal privilege (cp. Rom 14:13-15, 19-21; 15:1-2). These two basic principles lie at the heart of Paul’s advice on practical Christian living in this letter.
