OET (OET-LV) And_not he_will_increase for_him/it wives and_not heart_of_his it_will_turn_aside and_silver and_gold not he_will_increase for_him/it exceedingly.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
וְלֹ֤א יַרְבֶּה & לֹ֥א יַרְבֶּה
and=not acquire_many & not acquire_in_great_quantity
Here, multiply means “acquire a large number of.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [And he shall not keep acquiring more and more … he shall not acquire]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְלֹ֥א יָס֖וּר לְבָב֑וֹ
and=not turn_away heart_of,his
Here, the heart represents a person’s desires. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and he will not desire to turn aside]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְלֹ֥א יָס֖וּר לְבָב֑וֹ
and=not turn_away heart_of,his
See how you translated the phrase turn aside in [5:32](../05/32.md) where it is used with the same meaning. Alternate translation: [so his heart will not disobey Yahweh]
17:17 many wives: Polygamy is neither prohibited nor sanctioned here. This guideline was meant to moderate and regulate the practice. In the ancient world, kings married many wives to cement political alliances with other kingdoms, showing trust in human power rather than God’s provision. David (2 Sam 5:13; 12:11) and Solomon (1 Kgs 11:3-4) both ignored this warning to their own great harm and that of the nation.
• must not accumulate: The amassing of wealth was another sign of dependence on human resources.
OET (OET-LV) And_not he_will_increase for_him/it wives and_not heart_of_his it_will_turn_aside and_silver and_gold not he_will_increase for_him/it exceedingly.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.
