uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בָּנִ֣ים

sons

Here, sons means chosen and beloved people. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [are beloved people belonging to]

Note 2 topic: translate-symaction

לֹ֣א תִתְגֹּֽדְד֗וּ

not cut

The other people groups living in the land would cut themselves with sharp objects when they mourned the dead. If this would not be clear to your readers, you could explain the significance of this action in the text or in a footnote. Alternate translation: [Do not cut your skin with sharp objects in mourning]

Note 3 topic: translate-symaction

וְלֹֽא־תָשִׂ֧ימוּ קָרְחָ֛ה בֵּ֥ין עֵינֵיכֶ֖ם

and=not make bald between your(pl)=eyes

The other people groups living in the land would shave the hair at the front of their heads when they mourned the dead. If this would not be clear to your readers, you could explain the significance of this action in the text or in a footnote. Alternate translation: [and do not cut off the hair on your forehead in mourning]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

בֵּ֥ין עֵינֵיכֶ֖ם

between your(pl)=eyes

Here, between your eyes is a common expression that means “your forehead.” If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have this meaning or state the meaning plainly as is modeled in the UST.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:1 cut yourselves: This pagan custom was usually associated with mourning rites, perhaps to induce the dead to come back to life (see 1 Kgs 18:28; Zech 13:4-6).
• shave the hair: This practice also pertained to lament for the dead (see Lev 19:27-28; 21:5-6), but the exact meaning of this rite is unknown.
