uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

וְהָיָה֩

and=it_was

Moses is using the phrase And it will be to mark a change in what he is telling the Israelites. Use a word, phrase, or other method in your language that is natural for marking this sort of change.

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-condition-hypothetical

כִֽי

when

The word if here introduces the first part of a possible condition that extends through verse 2. Moses is describing what will happen if the Israelites experience both blessings and curses, are scattered among the nations, and then repent. Yahweh will only do the things described in verse 3 if this condition happens. Use a natural form in your language for introducing a condition that could happen.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

יָבֹ֨אוּ עָלֶ֜יךָ כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֗לֶּה

they_went on,you (Some words not found in UHB: and=it_was when they_went on,you all/each/any/every the,things the=these the,blessing and,the,curse which/who I_give to=your=face and,you_will_bring_[them]_back to/towards heart_of,your in=all the=nations which/who he,has_banished_you YHWH God_of,your to,(to) )

Here Moses is speaking of the blessings and curses as if they were things that could physically come on the people. He means that the people will experience these blessings and curses. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [all these things happen to you]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

נָתַ֖תִּי

(Some words not found in UHB: and=it_was when they_went on,you all/each/any/every the,things the=these the,blessing and,the,curse which/who I_give to=your=face and,you_will_bring_[them]_back to/towards heart_of,your in=all the=nations which/who he,has_banished_you YHWH God_of,your to,(to) )

Here Moses is speaking as if he had literally set physical objects in front of the Israelites. He means that he is presenting them with choices or options. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [I have presented] or [I have given]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

לְפָנֶ֑יךָ

to=your=face

Here, to your faces represents “in front of you” or “before you.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [before you]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וַהֲשֵׁבֹתָ֙ אֶל־לְבָבֶ֔ךָ

(Some words not found in UHB: and=it_was when they_went on,you all/each/any/every the,things the=these the,blessing and,the,curse which/who I_give to=your=face and,you_will_bring_[them]_back to/towards heart_of,your in=all the=nations which/who he,has_banished_you YHWH God_of,your to,(to) )

Moses is using return to your heart as a common expression of his culture to mean “think seriously about these things” or “reflect deeply on what has happened.” If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and you think seriously about these things] or [and you reflect on what has happened]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo

אֲשֶׁ֧ר הִדִּיחֲךָ֛ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ שָֽׁמָּה

(Some words not found in UHB: and=it_was when they_went on,you all/each/any/every the,things the=these the,blessing and,the,curse which/who I_give to=your=face and,you_will_bring_[them]_back to/towards heart_of,your in=all the=nations which/who he,has_banished_you YHWH God_of,your to,(to) )

It might seem that the expression where Yahweh your God has driven you there contains extra information that would not be natural to express in your language. If so, you could shorten it. Alternate translation: [where Yahweh your God has driven you]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ

YHWH God_of,your

See how you translated the phrase “Yahweh your God” in [1:10](../01/10.md).
