OET (OET-RV) When the king came past, the prophet called out to him, saying, “Your servant went out in the middle of the battle, and suddenly, a man came across with a captive and told me, ‘Guard this man. If he goes missing, your life will be forfeit in place of his, or else you’ll be fined three thousand pieces of silver.’

The author is stating the pronoun he separately, even though the verb translated as he cried out already includes this meaning. He is doing that to indicate that this action took place at the same time as the king was passing by. If a speaker of your language would use an explicit pronoun for the same purpose, you may want to use that construction in your translation. If not, your language may have other ways of showing the meaning here. Alternate translation: [and just as the king was passing by, he cried out]

The prophet is speaking of himself in the third person as your servant to show humility. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this in a humble form in the first person here and in the next verse. Alternate translation: [I, your servant,]

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [And he told me to guard that man. He said that if missing, he was missing, then my life would be in place of his life, or I should pay a kikkar of silver.]

In the story that the prophet is telling, the soldier is repeating forms of the verb missing in order to intensify his expression of the idea that it conveys. If your language can repeat words for intensification, it would be appropriate to do that here in your translation. If not, your language may have another way of expressing the intensification. Alternate translation: [If for any reason he is missing]

The soldier in the story is using your life will be in place of his life as a common expression of his culture to mean that the prophet would forfeit his own life for allowing the prisoner to escape. If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [then you will pay for that with your life] or [then we will execute you for letting him get away]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
