SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 18:35–43: Jesus healed a blind beggar

As Jesus and his disciples continued their journey to Jerusalem, they came to Jericho. A blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. He asked Jesus to make him able to see again. Luke does not mention the beggar’s name, but Mark mentions that his name was Bartimaeus. Jesus healed him and told him that the reason he could now see was because he believed in Jesus.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus Heals a Blind Man (NCV)

Jesus gives sight to a blind man

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 9:27–31, 20:29–34 and Mark 10:46–52.

18:42a

“Receive your sight!” Jesus replied.

“Receive your sight!” Jesus replied: The Greek word for Receive your sight is another form of the word that the blind man used when he said “let me see again” in 18:41b. Some ways to translate it are:

See!

Receive your sight!

I heal you so that you see again.

18:42b

“Your faith has healed you.”

Your faith has healed you: This clause indicates that Jesus healed the man from blindness because of his faith. The noun faith refers here to the action of believing and trusting Jesus. Your faith has healed you implies that the blind man believed that Jesus would heal him.

In some languages it may be more natural to translate faith as a verb. If that is true in your language, you may also need to make explicit who or what was believed. Some ways to translate this are:

You trusted in me and that is why you can now see.

Receive your sight because you believed that I could heal you.

See also 8:48a and 17:19b, where the same Greek phrase occurs. See believe, Meaning 2, in the Glossary.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / imperative

ἀνάβλεψον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀνάβλεψον ἡ πίστις σοῦ σέσωκεν σέ)

This was not a command that the man was capable of obeying. Instead, this was a command that directly caused the man to be healed. Alternate translation: [I have restored your sight]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε

the faith (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀνάβλεψον ἡ πίστις σοῦ σέσωκεν σέ)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun faith with a verb such as “believe.” Alternate translation: [Because you believed, you have been healed]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε

the faith (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀνάβλεψον ἡ πίστις σοῦ σέσωκεν σέ)

Jesus speaks of the man’s faith as if it had actively healed him. Alternate translation: [Because you believed, you have been healed]

ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε

the faith (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀνάβλεψον ἡ πίστις σοῦ σέσωκεν σέ)

Here Jesus seems to be using the word saved in one of its particular senses, to mean “healed.” Alternate translation: [Because you believed, you have been healed]
