OET (OET-RV)because I’m telling you that after this, I won’t drink the product of the vines again until God’s kingdom comes.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 22:14–23: Jesus gave his disciples bread and wine with a special meaning

In this section Jesus ate his last meal with his twelve disciples before he died. During this Passover meal, Jesus told them about the new covenant that he was making with them. He took bread and gave thanks to God. Then he divided the bread into pieces and gave it to his disciples to share. He said to them, “This is my body, given for you.” After the main meal, he gave his disciples a cup of wine to drink from. He said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” When Jesus said these things, he indicated that he would sacrifice himself by dying as a substitute for his disciples to save them from slavery to sin. By doing this, he would fulfill the real meaning of Passover. As God saved the people of Israel who put the blood of the Passover lamb on their doors, he will save the people who trust in Jesus’ sacrifice for them.

Jesus told his disciples to continue to remember him by taking bread and wine as his body and blood given for them. This thanksgiving service is now called the Eucharist, from the Greek word that means “thanksgiving.” It is also called the Lord’s Supper and Holy Communion.

Some other examples of headings for this section are:

The Lord’s Supper (NET)

Jesus established the Thanksgiving/Eucharist celebration

Jesus sacrifices his body and blood to save his disciples

Jesus makes a new covenant with his disciples

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 26:26–30, Mark 14:22–26, and 1 Corinthians 11:23–25.

22:18

This verse is very similar to 22:16. In that verse Jesus told his apostles that he would not celebrate the Passover with them again until the kingdom of God comes. In this verse he told them that he would not drink wine again until the kingdom of God comes. Translate this verse in a similar way as you translated 22:16.

22:18a

For I tell you that

For I tell you: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as For I tell you is exactly the same as the phrase that introduces 22:16. You may translate it in the same way here.

22:18b

that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on

I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on: This statement indicates that after that Passover meal, Jesus would not drink wine again with his apostles (until the kingdom of God came). Jesus referred here to the whole Passover meal as the last occasion on which he would share wine with his apostles before his death. He may have drunk more wine later in that same meal.

the fruit of the vine: The phrase the fruit of the vine is another way to refer to wine. Wine is a drink that is made from the fruit called “grapes,” which grow on a grape vine. Grapes, vines, and grapevines are often used as symbols in the Bible. When Jesus referred to the fruit of the vine his disciples knew that he referred to wine.

In some languages it may be confusing to refer to wine as the fruit of the vine. If this is true in your language, you may want to use your word for “wine” here. See the note on “cup” in 22:17a for more information and translation suggestions.

22:18c

until the kingdom of God comes.”

until the kingdom of God comes: The clause until the kingdom of God comes refers to the time when God will reign over everyone as king. At that time Jesus will reign with God. He will establish justice and give his people complete freedom from sin and slavery.

In this context the clause until the kingdom of God comes is very similar to what Jesus said in 22:16 “until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” You may want to translate it in the same way as you translated the phrase “in the kingdom of God” in that verse. See the note on 22:16b–c for examples.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-versebridge

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: λέγω Γάρ ὑμῖν οὒ μή πίω ἀπό τοῦ νῦν ἀπό τοῦ γεννήματος τῆς ἀμπέλου ἕως οὗ ἡ Βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἔλθῃ)

Jesus is giving the reason why he wants his disciples to share the wine, as he told them to do in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could put this reason before the result by combining this verse and the previous one into a verse bridge. See the suggestions in the note about the similar situation in [22:16](../22/16.md) for how you might do this.

λέγω & ὑμῖν

˱I˲_˓am˒_saying & ˱to˲_you_all

Jesus is using this phrase to emphasize the importance of what he is about to say. Alternate translation: [I can assure you]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ἀπὸ τοῦ γενήματος τῆς ἀμπέλου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: λέγω Γάρ ὑμῖν οὒ μή πίω ἀπό τοῦ νῦν ἀπό τοῦ γεννήματος τῆς ἀμπέλου ἕως οὗ ἡ Βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἔλθῃ)

Jesus is referring to the juice that people squeeze from grapes that grow on grapevines as if it were the fruit or grapes themselves. Wine is made from fermented grape juice. Alternate translation: [wine]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

ἕως οὗ ἡ Βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἔλθῃ

until ˱of˲_which the Kingdom ¬the ˱of˲_God ˓may˒_come

Jesus is speaking of the kingdom of God as if it could actively come on its own. Alternate translation: [until God establishes his kingdom]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἕως οὗ ἡ Βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἔλθῃ

until ˱of˲_which the Kingdom ¬the ˱of˲_God ˓may˒_come

See how you decided to translate the phrase the kingdom of God in [4:43](../04/43.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun kingdom with a verb such as “rule.” Alternate translation: [until God begins to rule as king]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

22:7-30 Jesus celebrated the traditional Jewish Passover but transformed it with reference to his own sacrificial death as the Passover lamb. He also prepared his disciples for his coming death and the leadership role they would assume over his church.

OET (OET-LV)For/Because I_am_saying to_you_all, by_no_means I_may_ not _drink of the fruit of_the vine from the time now, until of_which the kingdom of_ the _god may_come.

OET (OET-RV)because I’m telling you that after this, I won’t drink the product of the vines again until God’s kingdom comes.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
