OET (OET-LV) And the_one by_the_name Kleopas answering said to him, are_ you only _sojourning to_Hierousalaʸm and you_ not _knew the things having_become in it in the these days?

OET (OET-RV) and the one called Cleopas asked him, “Are you the only visitor staying in Yerushalem who doesn’t know what just happened in the last few days?”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 24:13–35: Jesus came to two disciples on the road to Emmaus

The author told how two of Jesus’ disciples saw Jesus on the road to the village of Emmaus, but they did not know that he was Jesus. He talked with them and reminded them that God’s prophets had said that the Messiah would die and rise again. They invited him into their home. As he sat at the table with them, God caused them to realize that this man himself was Jesus, who had become alive again. Jesus disappeared, and the two disciples went quickly back to Jerusalem and told the other disciples that they had seen the Lord.

The account in this section does not occur elsewhere in Scripture. Some other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus Appears to Two Disciples (CEV)

The Walk to Emmaus (NLT)

24:18a

One of them, named Cleopas, asked Him,

One of them, named Cleopas: Cleopas is a man’s name. Transliterate it according to the sounds of your language. The text does not give the name of the other disciple. These two disciples were introduced in 24:13.

asked Him: The word Him refers to Jesus. However, the question shows that Cleopas did not recognize Jesus. Some other ways to introduce the question are:

replied (GW)

asked Jesus (CEV)

24:18b

“Are You the only visitor to Jerusalem

24:18c

who does not know the things that have happened there in recent days?”

24:18b–c

Are You the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in recent days?: In Greek this is a rhetorical question that expresses surprise. The beginning of the question is more literally, “Are you alone visiting in Jerusalem and…?” The word “you” is emphasized. This indicates that Cleopas was surprised that Jesus did not know about the events that he and his companion were discussing. It implies that everyone else in Jerusalem knew about those events.

Some ways to translate this surprise are:

Translate this surprise in a way that is natural in your language.

the things that have happened there in recent days: This phrase refers to the events that happened to Jesus, especially the events listed in 24:20. The phrase in recent days refers to the events of the last week of Jesus’ life, especially to Jesus’ trial and crucifixion. Some other ways to translate it are:

what has happened there in the last few days (REB)

what has happened recently (GW)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys

ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ εἷς ὀνόματι Κλεοπᾶς εἶπεν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀποκριθείς Δέ εἱς ὀνόματι Κλεοπᾶς εἶπεν πρός αὐτόν Σύ μόνος παροικεῖς Ἰερουσαλήμ καί οὐκ ἔγνως τά γενόμενα ἐν αὐτῇ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις)

Together the two words answering and said mean that Cleopas responded to what Jesus asked him. Alternate translation: [Then one named Cleopas responded]

Note 2 topic: translate-names

Κλεοπᾶς

Cleopas

Cleopas is the name of a man.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

σὺ μόνος παροικεῖς Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ οὐκ ἔγνως τὰ γενόμενα ἐν αὐτῇ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀποκριθείς Δέ εἱς ὀνόματι Κλεοπᾶς εἶπεν πρός αὐτόν Σύ μόνος παροικεῖς Ἰερουσαλήμ καί οὐκ ἔγνως τά γενόμενα ἐν αὐτῇ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις)

Cleopas does not expect Jesus to tell him whether he is the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know what has recently happened in the city. Rather, Cleopas is using the question form to show his surprise, since he expects that everyone would know about these events. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate his words as a statement or exclamation. Alternate translation: [You must be the only person visiting Jerusalem who does not know what has just happened in the city!]

Note 4 topic: writing-pronouns

ἐν αὐτῇ

in it

Conventionally, Greek referred to cities with feminine pronouns. Your language may use a different gender. You could also use a noun. Alternate translation: [in it] or [in that city]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις

in in ¬the days these

Cleopas is using the term days to refer to a specific time. Alternate translation: [at this time] or [recently]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
