OET (OET-LV) and not having_found the body of_him, came saying also to_have_seen a_vision of_messengers, who are_saying him to_be_living.
OET (OET-RV) but they couldn’t find his body. Then they came back and told us about some vision about messengers from God who apparently said that he’s alive.
The author told how two of Jesus’ disciples saw Jesus on the road to the village of Emmaus, but they did not know that he was Jesus. He talked with them and reminded them that God’s prophets had said that the Messiah would die and rise again. They invited him into their home. As he sat at the table with them, God caused them to realize that this man himself was Jesus, who had become alive again. Jesus disappeared, and the two disciples went quickly back to Jerusalem and told the other disciples that they had seen the Lord.
The account in this section does not occur elsewhere in Scripture. Some other examples of headings for this section are:
Jesus Appears to Two Disciples (CEV)
The Walk to Emmaus (NLT)
but they did not find His body.
but they did not find/see his body there.
his body/corpse was not there.
but they did not find His body: The disciples implied here that the women did not find Jesus’ body because it was not there. They did not imply that the women should have searched for it more carefully. Some other ways to translate this clause are:
when they did not find his corpse
They said his body was missing (NLT)
They came and told us they had seen a vision of angels,
Then the women came to us(excl). They said/reported that they had seen angels,
After that, they came to us(excl). They told us that angels from heaven/God appeared to them
who said that Jesus was alive.
and the angels said that Jesus is alive.
and told them that now Jesus lives.
They came and told us: The phrase They came and told us implies that when the women left the tomb, they went to Jesus’ disciples to tell them what they saw there. Some other ways to translate the clause are:
They came to us and said
Then they came back to our group and told us
told us: The BSB supplies the word us here. It refers to the group of Jesus’ followers whom the women told about going to his tomb. It does not refer only to the two disciples who were walking with Jesus. It does not include the person (Jesus) to whom they are speaking.
they had seen a vision of angels: This clause is another way to say “they had seen angels.” In this context the word vision implies that the angels were sent from God. They normally live in heaven with God, and people do not usually see them. The word vision does not imply here that the women were asleep or in a trance. Another way to translate the clause is:
they had seen angels (NLT)
angels: The word “angel” occurred in 22:43. For more information and translation suggestions, see the notes at 22:43a. See also angel, Meaning 1, in the Glossary.
In some languages it may be more natural to translate the order of events in these verses in a different way. For example:
22bThen early this morning some women among us went to his tomb 23abut did not find his body. 22aThey returned to us with an amazing story. 23bThey said they saw angels 23cwho said he was alive.
Translate the information in these verses in a natural order in your language. If you combine the verses, you may put both verse numbers at the beginning of the verse. For example:
22–23And then this morning some women in our group went to the tomb. They said that they did not find his body, but they saw angels who said he was alive! We were amazed when the women said that.
καὶ μὴ εὑροῦσαι τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ, ἦλθαν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί μή εὑροῦσαι τό σῶμα αὐτοῦ ἦλθον λέγουσαι καί ὀπτασίαν ἀγγέλων ἑωρακέναι οἵ λέγουσιν αὐτόν ζῆν)
If you began a new sentence at the end of the previous verse, you could continue it here. Alternate translation: [but they did not find his body, so they came to us]
OET (OET-LV) and not having_found the body of_him, came saying also to_have_seen a_vision of_messengers, who are_saying him to_be_living.
OET (OET-RV) but they couldn’t find his body. Then they came back and told us about some vision about messengers from God who apparently said that he’s alive.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
