SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 24:50–53: Jesus went up to heaven

In this section Jesus blessed his followers, and then God took him up to heaven. This happened forty days after Jesus became alive again. Luke wrote about this same event in Acts 1:9–11.

Some examples of other headings for this section are:

Jesus Returns to Heaven (CEV)

Jesus Is Taken Up to Heaven (GNT)

The Ascension (NLT)

There are parallel passages for this section in Mark 16:19–20 and Acts 1:9–11.

24:51a

While He was blessing them,

While He was blessing them: This statement introduces what happened at the time when Jesus was still blessing his followers. As he was blessing them, he was carried away from them into heaven. Some other ways to introduce what happened are:

As Jesus was still blessing them

Now during the blessing (NET)

And it happened that as he blessed them

24:51b

He left them and was carried up into heaven.

He left them and was carried up into heaven: The phrase He left them and was carried up into heaven implies that Jesus left his followers as he was taken up to heaven. He probably did not walk away from them first. Another way to translate this is:

he was lifted/carried away from them into heaven

was carried up into heaven: The verb was carried up means “was carried/lifted up.” This verb is passive. It implies here that God lifted/carried Jesus up into heaven. In some languages it may be more natural to use an active verb and indicate that God took him up. For example:

and God took him up into heaven

and God carried him into heaven

heaven: The Greek word that the BSB translates as heaven can have two meanings:

  1. it refers to heaven, the place of God;

  2. it refers to the sky.

Here it refers to both. Jesus rose up into the sky and also up into the presence of God.

See heaven, Meaning 2, in the Glossary.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

καὶ ἐγένετο

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ εὐλογεῖν αὐτόν αὐτούς διέστη ἀπʼ αὐτῶν καί ἀνεφέρετο εἰς τόν οὐρανόν)

Luke uses this phrase to introduce a significant development in this episode. Use a word, phrase, or other method in your language that is natural for this purpose.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἀνεφέρετο εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν

˱he˲_˓was_being˒_brought_up into (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ εὐλογεῖν αὐτόν αὐτούς διέστη ἀπʼ αὐτῶν καί ἀνεφέρετο εἰς τόν οὐρανόν)

Since Luke does not specify who carried Jesus up to heaven, we do not know whether God himself did this or one or more angels did it. If your language would have to specify who did the carrying, it may be better to say “went” instead, as UST does.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

24:51 Cp. 2 Kgs 2:11. Jesus’ ascension was his exaltation to a position of authority over all creation (see Acts 2:32-36; 5:31; Eph 1:19-23; Phil 2:9-11; Heb 1:13).
