OET (OET-LV)And having_risen_up to_the_same the hour, they_returned to Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim), and they_found the eleven and the ones with them having_been_gathered

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 24:13–35: Jesus came to two disciples on the road to Emmaus

The author told how two of Jesus’ disciples saw Jesus on the road to the village of Emmaus, but they did not know that he was Jesus. He talked with them and reminded them that God’s prophets had said that the Messiah would die and rise again. They invited him into their home. As he sat at the table with them, God caused them to realize that this man himself was Jesus, who had become alive again. Jesus disappeared, and the two disciples went quickly back to Jerusalem and told the other disciples that they had seen the Lord.

The account in this section does not occur elsewhere in Scripture. Some other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus Appears to Two Disciples (CEV)

The Walk to Emmaus (NLT)

24:33a

And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem.

And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem: The Greek sentence that the BSB translates as they got up that very hour and returned is literally “Having arisen the very same hour/moment, they returned.” The phrase “the very same hour/moment” emphasizes that the two disciples got up immediately and returned to Jerusalem. They did not wait even an hour. They felt it was urgent to give this news to the other followers of Jesus.

Some other ways to translate this part of the verse are:

So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem. (NAB)

And they got to their feet without delay and turned back to Jerusalem. (JBP)

So they got right up and returned to Jerusalem. (CEV)

24:33b

There they found

24:33c

the Eleven and those with them, gathered together

24:33b–c

There they found the Eleven and those with them, gathered together: This clause implies that when the two disciples arrived in Jerusalem, they went to the place where they expected Jesus’ apostles and other followers to be. Just as they expected, the eleven apostles and the others were gathered there. Some other ways to translate the clause are:

There they found the eleven apostles and others gathered (NCV)

There they found that the eleven and the rest of the company had assembled (REB)

and met with the eleven disciples of Jesus and his other companions who had/were gathered

the Eleven: The phrase the Eleven refers to the group of Jesus’ apostles. See the note on 24:9b for more information. After Judas died (Matthew 27:1–5), the disciples changed the name of this group from “the Twelve” to the Eleven. The phrase is a way to refer to the group as a whole. It does not necessarily imply that all eleven apostles were in that particular gathering. This gathering may have been the same as the one in John 20:24 when Thomas was not there.

Another way to translate the Eleven is:

the eleven apostles (NCV)

those with them: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as those with them refers to the larger group of Jesus’ followers mentioned as “all the others” in 24:9b. The group included both men and women.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / verbs

ἀναστάντες & ὑπέστρεψαν & εὗρον

˓having˒_risen_up & ˱they˲_returned & ˱they˲_found

These verbs would be in the dual form, if your language uses that form, since they describe actions of the two men.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἀναστάντες

˓having˒_risen_up

As in [24:12](../24/12.md), this expression is an idiom that means to take initiative. It does not necessarily mean that the men had been sitting or lying down and then stood up. Alternate translation: [starting out]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ

˱to˲_˓the˒_same ¬the hour

Luke is using the term hour to refer to a specific time. Alternate translation: [at once]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

εὗρον ἠθροισμένους τοὺς ἕνδεκα καὶ τοὺς σὺν αὐτοῖς

˱they˲_found ˓having_been˒_gathered (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀναστάντες αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ καί εὗρον ἠθροισμένους τούς ἕνδεκα καί τούς σύν αὐτοῖς)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [they found that the 11 apostles had gathered together with some other disciples]

Note 5 topic: translate-names

τοὺς ἕνδεκα

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀναστάντες αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ καί εὗρον ἠθροισμένους τούς ἕνδεκα καί τούς σύν αὐτοῖς)

See how you translated this term in [24:9](../24/09.md).
