SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 24:44–49: Jesus gave final instructions to his followers

In this section Jesus helped his followers to understand the things that were written about him in the Scriptures. He reminded his followers that they had seen these things happen. They had to spread this good news so that people of all countries would repent and believe in him. Then he told his followers that they would receive power to preach those things, as God had promised. He told them that they must wait in Jerusalem until they received this power.

Scholars have different opinions about when Jesus spoke the words in this section. It is likely that he spoke them after some days had passed and he was about to go back to heaven. The words may also be a summary of things that Jesus said to his followers during the forty days when he was with them after his resurrection. Parallel passages show that it is unlikely that Jesus spoke all of these words on the same day that he rose from the dead. For example, the events in John 21 show that the disciples did leave Jerusalem and go to Galilee. If Jesus had told them on his resurrection day that they should not leave Jerusalem (24:49), it is unlikely that they would have gone there.

Some other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus’ Final Commission (NET)

Jesus’ followers must preach about him to all nations

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 28:16–20, Mark 16:15–18, and Acts 1:6–8.

24:49a

And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you.

And behold: In Greek, 24:49a begins with the common phrase that the BSB translates as And behold. Some other English versions do not translate this phrase. There is a textual issue concerning this phrase. Some Greek manuscripts do not have the word that the NET translates as “look.” There is strong evidence for both textual readings. The Greek NT includes the word in brackets with a C rating, indicating that the committee had difficulty making the decision. In this context the phrase implies that what Jesus was about to say was important, and he wanted his followers to pay special attention to it. It does not imply that his followers were not already listening to him. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

And now (NLT)

And see (NRSV)

Introduce this verse in a way that is natural in your language.

I am sending the promise of My Father upon you: The BSB literally represents the Greek of this phrase. The promise that Jesus referred to here is the Holy Spirit. He will send the Holy Spirit to help his followers be his witnesses.

The Holy Spirit is one of the three persons of the Trinity. In some languages it may be important to refer to him as a personal being, rather than an object. For example:

I will send you the one whom my Father has promised.

I…will send the-one my Father promised so that he will descend to you.Kankanaey back translation on TW.

In other languages it may be necessary to make explicit that Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit. For example:

And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. (NLT)

For similar promises about the Holy Spirit, see 12:12, John 14:16–17, and Joel 2:28–29.

I am sending: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates literally as I am sending refers to an action that Jesus will soon do. The pronoun I is emphatic here. Other ways to translate this phrase in English are:

As for me, I will soon send

I am sending (NRSV)

Translate the timing of the action in a natural way in your language.

the promise of My Father upon you: This clause indicates that God had already assured them that he would send the Holy Spirit to them. The text does not indicate when God made that promise.

My Father: Jesus used the phrase My Father to refer to God. In some languages it may be necessary to make this explicit:

my Father God

God my Father

24:49b

But remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

But: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as But introduces a contrast between what Jesus will do (24:49a) and what he wanted his followers to do. They must wait until they received the help he promised before leaving the city. In Greek the conjunction is followed by an emphatic “you.” The clause in 24:49b also expresses what they should do as a result of what Jesus said he will do. Versions such as the NRSV introduce it with “so.” Introduce 24:49b in a natural way in your language.

remain in the city: The clause remain in the city indicates that Jesus’ followers should remain in Jerusalem. Jesus did not want the disciples to leave Jerusalem and go home to Galilee. He wanted them to wait in Jerusalem until they received the one whom he had promised. Some other way to translate this clause are:

you must wait in the city (GNT)

wait here in this city (REB)

until you have been clothed with power from on high: This clause means, “until you receive power from God/heaven.” The context implies that they should use this power to tell people about Jesus’ death and resurrection.

The phrase clothed with power from on high is a metaphor. It does not indicate that Jesus’ followers will be covered with power in a literal way. Some ways to translate this metaphor are:

The clause is passive. In some languages it may be more natural to translate it as active. For example:

until God empowers you

until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven (NLT)

See also the statement in Acts 1:8, which refers to the Holy Spirit coming on Jesus’ disciples.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

24:49 I will send the Holy Spirit: The Old Testament predicted that God would pour out his Spirit on all people (Isa 32:15; Jer 31:33; Ezek 36:26-27; Joel 2:28-32). This prediction was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:14-21).

OET (OET-LV)And see I am_sending_out the promise of_the father of_me on you_all, but you_all sit_down in the city, until of_which you_all_may_dress_in power from of_height.

OET (OET-RV)Soon I’ll be sending out the one that my father promised to you all, but meanwhile you must remain here in the city until you all get clothed in power that comes from heaven.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
