SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 24:13–35: Jesus came to two disciples on the road to Emmaus

The author told how two of Jesus’ disciples saw Jesus on the road to the village of Emmaus, but they did not know that he was Jesus. He talked with them and reminded them that God’s prophets had said that the Messiah would die and rise again. They invited him into their home. As he sat at the table with them, God caused them to realize that this man himself was Jesus, who had become alive again. Jesus disappeared, and the two disciples went quickly back to Jerusalem and told the other disciples that they had seen the Lord.

The account in this section does not occur elsewhere in Scripture. Some other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus Appears to Two Disciples (CEV)

The Walk to Emmaus (NLT)

24:15a

And as they talked and deliberated,

And as they talked and deliberated: In Greek this clause is more literally “and it happened in their talking and discussing.” This clause introduces the very important fact in 24:15b that Jesus came and walked with them! This clause in 24:15a creates suspense by repeating information from 24:14. It also uses two verbs with similar meanings: talked and deliberated.

In some languages repetition does not create suspense. If that is true in your language, you may want to create the suspense in a different way. For example:

Suddenly (NLT96)

Other ways to translate it are:

While they were talking (GW)

Then as they talked and discussed all these things

Introduce the important event in 24:15b in a natural way in your language.

talked and deliberated: Here Jesus’ followers continued their discussion from 24:14. Some English versions supply the object “these things” to indicate that. In some languages, as in Greek, it may not be necessary to have an object.

The Greek word that the BSB translates as deliberated refers to conversing in a lively way about something. It often refers to arguing or debating. Some other ways to translate talked and deliberated are:

were talking and debating

conversing

24:15b

Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them.

Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them: This clause indicates that Jesus began walking with his two followers in a natural way. They did not notice anything unusual. He may have overtaken them from behind or come onto the main road from a side road. There is nothing in the text to imply that Jesus appeared miraculously. Some other ways to translate the clause are:

Jesus approached them and began walking with them (GW)

Jesus himself came near and began walking with them (NCV)

Jesus Himself: Here the word Himself emphasizes that Jesus, the very person they were talking about, was the one who joined them. Some English versions do not include this emphasis. Do what is natural for your language in this context.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

καὶ ἐγένετο

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ὁμιλεῖν αὐτούς καί συζητεῖν καί αὐτός Ἰησοῦς ἐγγίσας συνεπορεύετο αὐτοῖς)

Luke uses this phrase to introduce a significant development in this episode. Use a word, phrase, or other method in your language that is natural for this purpose.

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

αὐτὸς Ἰησοῦς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ὁμιλεῖν αὐτούς καί συζητεῖν καί αὐτός Ἰησοῦς ἐγγίσας συνεπορεύετο αὐτοῖς)

The word himself emphasizes the fact that it was truly Jesus who joined them as they walked. This was not a vision in which Jesus only appeared to be there. Alternate translation: [Jesus, risen from the dead]

ἐγγίσας, συνεπορεύετο αὐτοῖς

˓having˒_neared ˓was˒_going_with ˱with˲_them

Alternate translation: [caught up with them and walked along with them]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

24:13-34 This account is Luke’s unique contribution to the resurrection narratives. Jesus corrected these disciples’ misunderstanding by showing from Scripture that it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer. He then opened their eyes to the truth of his resurrection.
