SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 24:36–43: Jesus appeared to his followers

This section tells about another time when Jesus appeared to people after he rose from the dead. Jesus had already appeared to Simon (24:34) and to the two men on the road to Emmaus. In this section Jesus appeared to all eleven apostles and those who were with them. He ate with them and proved that he really was alive.

Some examples of other headings for this section are:

Jesus Appears to His Followers (NCV)

Jesus showed his followers that he was alive

There are parallel passages for this section in Mark 16:14, John 20:19–23, and Acts 1:4–5.

24:40

And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and feet.

There is a textual issue here:

  1. Most Greek manuscripts contain this verse. For example:

As he spoke, he showed them his hands and his feet. (NLT) (BSB, NIV, KJV, NASB, NJB, NRSV, NET, GW, NLT, CEV, NCV, GNT, ESV)

  2. Some Greek manuscripts do not contain this verse. (RSV, REB, JBP)

It is recommended that you follow option (1) and include this verse. It has early and strong manuscript support, and the majority of English versions follow this option. The Greek NT includes this verse with a B rating, indicating that the text is almost certain. (For information on this rating system, see p. 3 in the introduction.) For more information, see Metzger, pp. 160–61.

And when He had said this: The Greek clause that the BSB translates as And when He had said this is more literally “and saying this” or “and having said this.” It introduces what Jesus did as he said the words in 24:39 (or immediately after he said those words). He showed the disciples his hands and feet. Some other ways to introduce the next action are:

As he said this (GW)

After Jesus said this (CEV)

He showed them His hands and feet: This clause indicates that Jesus held out his hands and feet so that the disciples could clearly see the wounds in them. Some other ways to translate this clause are:

…he held out his hands for them to see, and he showed them his feet. (NLT96)

And he showed them where the nails had passed through his hands and feet.Western Bukidnon Manobo back translation on TW.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

τὰς χεῖρας καὶ τοὺς πόδας

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί τοῦτο εἰπών ἔδειξεν αὐτοῖς τάς χεῖρας καί τούς πόδας)

As in [24:39](../24/39.md), this means the nail marks from crucifixion in Jesus’ hands and feet. Alternate translation: [the nail marks in his hands and feet]
