SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 24:44–49: Jesus gave final instructions to his followers

In this section Jesus helped his followers to understand the things that were written about him in the Scriptures. He reminded his followers that they had seen these things happen. They had to spread this good news so that people of all countries would repent and believe in him. Then he told his followers that they would receive power to preach those things, as God had promised. He told them that they must wait in Jerusalem until they received this power.

Scholars have different opinions about when Jesus spoke the words in this section. It is likely that he spoke them after some days had passed and he was about to go back to heaven. The words may also be a summary of things that Jesus said to his followers during the forty days when he was with them after his resurrection. Parallel passages show that it is unlikely that Jesus spoke all of these words on the same day that he rose from the dead. For example, the events in John 21 show that the disciples did leave Jerusalem and go to Galilee. If Jesus had told them on his resurrection day that they should not leave Jerusalem (24:49), it is unlikely that they would have gone there.

Some other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus’ Final Commission (NET)

Jesus’ followers must preach about him to all nations

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 28:16–20, Mark 16:15–18, and Acts 1:6–8.

24:48–49

In 24:48–49 Jesus told his followers what they must do. Then he told them what he would do. Then he focused again on what his followers must do. Each part of the verse begins by referring to Jesus or his followers in an emphatic way. They (24:48) will be his witnesses. He (24:49a) will send the Holy Spirit to them. But they (24:49b) must stay in the city and wait to receive the Holy Spirit. This emphasis indicates the change of focus. Indicate this change of focus in a natural way in your language.

24:48

You are witnesses of these things.

You are witnesses of these things: This clause indicates that Jesus wanted his followers to tell other people about his suffering, death, and resurrection. It also indicates that they are his witnesses to proclaim his message about repentance for forgiveness of sins (24:46–47).

Some other ways to translate the clause are:

You have seen these things happen, and you must tell others.

…you must tell everything that has happened. (CEV)

I appoint/send you as my witnesses to tell others about these things.

The word You is emphatic in the clause. Some other ways to translate the emphasis in English are:

You yourselves are witnesses of all these things.

You have witnessed these things yourselves, and you must tell others about them.

witnesses: The Greek word that the BSB translates as witnesses refers to people who tell others what they have seen and heard. It does not refer only to someone who gives legal testimony in a court case. Jesus’ followers must tell what they saw of his death and resurrection They must also tell others the message that they heard him explain to them.

these things: The phrase these things refers to Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection. Jesus explained to them that his death and resurrection fulfilled the Scriptures. They saw those events and heard him explain them. Jesus wanted them to tell others about what they saw and to also explain those events, as he had explained the events to them. Refer to these things in a natural way in your language.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ὑμεῖς μάρτυρες τούτων

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὑμεῖς μάρτυρες τούτων)

The implication is that because the disciples are witnesses of the things that happened to Jesus, they are the ones who should go and tell others about these things, from their own firsthand experience. Alternate translation: [You saw everything that happened to me, and now you must go and tell others what you saw]
