SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:8–20: Angels announced to shepherds that the Savior was born

In this section some shepherds were taking care of their sheep in fields near Bethlehem. An angel came to them and told them that Christ the Savior had been born that night in Bethlehem. He told them that they would find the baby lying in a feeding box for animals. Then other angels came and praised God. After the angels left, the shepherds went to Bethlehem and found the baby, just as the angel had said they would.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

Angels tell shepherds about Jesus’ birth and the shepherds visit him

The Shepherds and the Angels (GNT)

2:17a

After they had seen the Child, they spread

they spread: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as spread is literally “made known.” The shepherds “made known” or “told” others what the angel had told them about the baby.

The Greek text does not say to whom the shepherds told this. There are two points of view:

  1. They told it to everyone whom they saw. For example:

the shepherds told everyone (NLT) (NLT, NIV, JBP, KJV)

  2. They told it to Mary and Joseph. For example:

they told his parents (CEV) (CEV, GNT)

Most English versions do not specifically say to whom the shepherds told this.

It may be more natural in your language to make explicit to whom the shepherds told the news. If that is true in your language, it is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). Interpretation (1) seems to fit the context better, because 2:18 says that “all who heard it were amazed.”

2:17b

the message they had received about Him.

the message: The Greek word that the BSB translates as the message is literally “the word/saying.” It refers to the angel’s statement that the child was the “Savior, Christ the Lord” (2:11).

they had received about Him: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as they had received about Him is passive, literally “that had been told to them about this child.” It does not indicate who told the shepherds about the child. The context indicates that the angel told them (2:9–12).

If it is more natural in your language to say who told the shepherds about this child, you can say:

what the angel had told them about this child

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

τοῦ ῥήματος τοῦ λαληθέντος αὐτοῖς

the saying ¬which ˓having_been˒_spoken ˱to˲_them

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who did the action. Alternate translation: [what the angels had told them]
