OET (OET-RV)He had come to the temple listening to the spirit at just the same time as the parents brought in the baby Yeshua in order to follow the rituals for new parents.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:21–40: The baby Jesus at the temple

The events in this section happened some days after Jesus was born.

In 2:21–24, Luke mentioned three ceremonies that were done when Jewish boys were born:

  1. the baby boy was circumcised;

  2. the mother was ritually purified;

  3. the baby boy was presented to God.

In 2:25–38 Luke described two other events that happened while Joseph, Mary, and Jesus were at the temple in Jerusalem. God allowed two righteous people named Simeon and Anna to see Jesus and to thank God for him. Simeon spoke a prophecy about Jesus and Mary.

In 2:39–40 Luke concluded the section. Joseph and Mary took Jesus back to their home in Nazareth, where he grew and became strong and wise. The Gospel of Matthew indicates that before they went to Nazareth, Joseph and Mary took Jesus to Egypt and stayed there for some time. Although Luke does not mention this, you should connect the clauses in 2:39 in a way that does not contradict it.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus’ Parents Obey Moses’ Teachings (GW)

Jesus Presented at the Temple (NASB)

Some English versions begin new sections at 2:25 and at 2:36. If you decide to do this in your translation, some possible headings are:

Simeon saw Jesus and prophesied about him (2:25)

Anna thanked God for Jesus and told others about him (2:36)

Simeon’s Prophecy (2:25)

Anna’s Prophecy (2:36)

2:27a

Led by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts.

Led by the Spirit, he went: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as Led by the Spirit, he went is literally “He went in the Spirit.” This means that the Spirit of God caused Simeon to want to go to the temple area.

Some other ways to translate this phrase are:

The Spirit led Simeon (NCV)

the Spirit told Simeon to go (CEV)

Spirit: The term Spirit here refers to the Holy Spirit. This is the same Spirit as in 2:25d.

the temple courts: The Greek word that the BSB translates as temple courts is literally “temple” (as in most English versions). The temple was in Jerusalem and was the most important place where Jews worshiped God. It consisted of the main building and the walls and courtyards that surrounded it. Here “temple” refers specifically to one of the courtyards.

Some English versions (BSB, NIV, NET) have made this clear by translating “temple” as temple courts. You may want to do this also if your word or phrase for “temple” would make readers think they met inside the temple building.

Some ways to translate the term temple courts are:

Be sure to use a different term from the one you have chosen for “synagogue.” There was only one temple, but there were many synagogues where the Jews met regularly for worship.

See temple, Meaning 1, in the Glossary for more information about the temple and how to translate it.

2:27b

And when the parents brought in the child Jesus

the parents: The phrase the parents refers to Mary and Joseph. Joseph was not the biological father of Jesus, but he was his legal father.

brought in the child Jesus: In your translation, it may already be clear here that Jesus was a child. If so, then it may be more natural in your language to make “the child” implicit. For example:

brought in Jesus

the child: At this time, Jesus was between one and two months old. If you translate “child,” you should use a word or phrase that fits his age. For example:

the baby

2:27c

to do for Him what was customary under the Law,

to do for Him what was customary under the Law: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as to do for Him what was customary under the Law is more literally “for them to do according to the custom of the Law about him.” The Law that God gave the Israelites required them to do certain things for firstborn males. The Israelites later started doing other things that were based on this Law but that were not stated in it.The Law required a payment to be made to the priests for each firstborn son unless that son was to remain in God’s service. The Law did not specifically require parents to present their child to the Lord at the Temple. However, that custom was based on the Law, as 2:23b says, “Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to the Lord.” In your translation you should not state that Joseph and Mary paid the payment for Jesus, because it is not clear from the text that they did that. Jesus remained consecrated to God’s service. These things became customs.

When Jesus’ parents brought him to the temple to present him to God, they were following such a custom. This entire clause refers back to what was already mentioned in 2:22b–23.

Some other ways to translate this clause are:

to perform for him the custom derived from the Law concerning him as a firstborn son

to do the customary thing for him based on Moses’ law

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἦλθεν ἐν τῷ Πνεύματι

˱he˲_came in the Spirit

This is an idiom. Alternate translation: [he came as the Holy Spirit directed him]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / go

ἦλθεν & εἰς τὸ ἱερόν

˱he˲_came & into (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἦλθεν ἐν τῷ Πνεύματι εἰς τό ἱερόν καί ἐν τῷ εἰσαγαγεῖν τούς γονεῖς τό παιδίον Ἰησοῦν τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτούς κατά τό εἰθισμένον τοῦ νόμου περί αὐτοῦ)

Your language may say “went” in contexts such as this. Alternate translation: [he went … into the temple]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

εἰς τὸ ἱερόν

into (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἦλθεν ἐν τῷ Πνεύματι εἰς τό ἱερόν καί ἐν τῷ εἰσαγαγεῖν τούς γονεῖς τό παιδίον Ἰησοῦν τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτούς κατά τό εἰθισμένον τοῦ νόμου περί αὐτοῦ)

Since only priests could enter the temple building, this means the temple courtyard. Luke is using the word for the entire building to refer to one part of it. Alternate translation: [into the temple courtyard]

Note 4 topic: writing-participants

τοὺς γονεῖς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἦλθεν ἐν τῷ Πνεύματι εἰς τό ἱερόν καί ἐν τῷ εἰσαγαγεῖν τούς γονεῖς τό παιδίον Ἰησοῦν τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτούς κατά τό εἰθισμένον τοῦ νόμου περί αὐτοῦ)

This means the parents of Jesus. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use their names here. Alternate translation: [Mary and Joseph]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτοὺς κατὰ τὸ εἰθισμένον τοῦ νόμου περὶ αὐτοῦ

˱of˲_the_‹thing› ˓to˒_do ˱by˲_the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἦλθεν ἐν τῷ Πνεύματι εἰς τό ἱερόν καί ἐν τῷ εἰσαγαγεῖν τούς γονεῖς τό παιδίον Ἰησοῦν τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτούς κατά τό εἰθισμένον τοῦ νόμου περί αὐτοῦ)

The phrase to do according to the custom of the law refers to the ceremony of dedication that Luke described in [2:22–25](../02/22.md). If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [to perform the ceremony of dedication that the law of God required]

OET (OET-LV)And he_came in the spirit into the temple, and at the time the parents to_bring_in, the little_child Yaʸsous, them to_do of_the thing according_to the thing having_been_accustomed by_the law for him,

OET (OET-RV)He had come to the temple listening to the spirit at just the same time as the parents brought in the baby Yeshua in order to follow the rituals for new parents.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
