OET (OET-LV)I_am_saying to_you_all, no_one is greater among those born of_women Yōannaʸs, but the the_least in the kingdom of_ the _god is greater than he.

OET (OET-RV)I’m telling all of you, no one who’s been born from a woman is greater than Yohan, yet the lowest person in God’s kingdom is greater than him.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 7:18–35: John the Baptizer sent messengers to Jesus

At the time when the events in this section happened, John the Baptizer was in prison (3:20). He sent two of his disciples to Jesus to ask Jesus whether he was the Messiah. He referred to the Messiah as “the coming one” whom he and the people were expecting. Jesus’ answer implied that he was the Messiah.

After John’s messengers had left, Jesus talked about what a great man John was. But he also implied that the coming kingdom would be greater. It would be so great that people who would experience it and its benefits would have even greater privileges and blessings than John had. Finally, Jesus showed that the Jewish religious leaders rejected the plan of God, since they rejected both John and Jesus.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus responds to the messengers of John the Baptizer and speaks about John to the crowd

Jesus speaks to the people about John the Baptizer

Jesus teaches about John the Baptizer

There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 11:3–19.

7:28a

I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John,

I tell you: Here Jesus again used the words I tell you to show his listeners that he was about to tell them something important. See the note on 7:26c. In some languages you may need to make it clear that Jesus was no longer quoting the prophet Malachi. He was speaking his own words. For example:

And now I myself tell you

among those born of women there is no one greater than John: There is a textual issue here. The earliest Greek manuscripts and those with the most widespread support have “there is no one greater than John.” Some later manuscripts have “no greater prophet…than John.” Still others have “no greater prophet…than John the Baptist.” The KJV is the only major English version that follows the manuscripts that say “no greater prophet…than John the Baptist.” If the national language version in the area follows one of the latter two readings along with the KJV, you may want to mention this in a footnote in your translation. For example: Some Greek manuscripts have “no greater prophet than John the Baptist.” This statement means that John was greater than any other person. Other ways to translate this are:

John is greater than any other person ever born… (NCV)

John is the greatest man that a woman ever bore.

In some languages it may be natural to translate this comparison in another way. For example:

Some people are very great. John is even greater than any of them.

those born of women: The phrase those born of women is a figurative way to refer to everyone who has ever lived. It is another way to say “human beings.”

greater than John: In this context no human being is greater than John in the sense that he was the one who was chosen to prepare people for the Messiah’s coming. No human being had a more important role than that. Other ways to translate this are:

more important than John

who has a greater position/privilege than John

7:28b

yet even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

yet: The Greek word that the BSB translates as yet introduces a paradox, a second truth that seems to conflict with the first truth. Another way to translate this is:

but (GNT)

even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he: This statement compares John to the person who is the least important in the kingdom of God. It indicates that even a person who has very low status in the kingdom of God has higher status than John. This implies the fact that Jesus was establishing the kingdom (rule) of God in a new way. This new way that God was ruling and caring for his people was greater than the old way. He gave new power and privileges to the people who were submitting to his rule.

Here are some ways to translate even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he:

…any person in the kingdom of God, even the person with the least privileges, is greater than John.

…the least important person in the kingdom of God is greater than John. (GW)

…even the most insignificant person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is! (NLT96)

even the least in the kingdom of God: The phrase even the least in the kingdom of God refers to the person who has the lowest status or position in the kingdom of God.

uW Translation Notes:

λέγω ὑμῖν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Λέγω ὑμῖν μείζων ἐν γεννητοῖς γυναικῶν Ἰωάννου οὐδείς ἐστίν ὁ δέ μικρότερος ἐν τῇ Βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ μείζων αὐτοῦ ἐστίν)

Jesus uses this phrase to focus the crowd’s attention on what he will say next. Alternate translation: [Now listen carefully]

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἐν γεννητοῖς γυναικῶν

among_‹those› born ˱of˲_women

The phrase those born of women is an idiom that refers to all people. Alternate translation: [of all the people who have ever lived]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐν γεννητοῖς γυναικῶν

among_‹those› born ˱of˲_women

If you would like to retain the idiom but your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [among those whom women have borne]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / litotes

μείζων & Ἰωάννου οὐδείς ἐστιν

greater & John no_one greater_‹than› & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Λέγω ὑμῖν μείζων ἐν γεννητοῖς γυναικῶν Ἰωάννου οὐδείς ἐστίν ὁ δέ μικρότερος ἐν τῇ Βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ μείζων αὐτοῦ ἐστίν)

Here Jesus is using a figure of speech that expresses a strong positive meaning by using a negative term together with a word that is the opposite of the intended meaning. Alternate translation: [John is the greatest]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

ὁ & μικρότερος

the & ˓the˒_least

Jesus is using the adjective least as a noun in order to indicate a kind of person. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you could translate this word with an equivalent phrase. Alternate translation: [the least important person]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἐν τῇ Βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ

among_‹those› in the Kingdom ¬the ˱of˲_God

See how you decided to translate the phrase the kingdom of God in [4:43](../04/43.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun kingdom with a verb such as “rule.” Alternate translation: [whose life God is ruling]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

μείζων αὐτοῦ ἐστιν

greater greater_‹than› he (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Λέγω ὑμῖν μείζων ἐν γεννητοῖς γυναικῶν Ἰωάννου οὐδείς ἐστίν ὁ δέ μικρότερος ἐν τῇ Βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ μείζων αὐτοῦ ἐστίν)

The implication is that being part of the kingdom of God is greater than any human distinctive. So anyone who is part of God’s kingdom is greater than even John, whom Jesus said was the greatest person who had ever lived before the coming of the kingdom. Alternate translation: [is greater than John is because they are part of something greater than anything that is human]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:28 Jesus praised John as the greatest person who ever lived under the old covenant. But even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than John. The blessings of the new covenant—free and complete forgiveness of sins, the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, and intimate knowledge of God—give believers in Jesus a new and greater position than even John enjoyed.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
