SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 7:11–17: Jesus caused a widow’s son to live again

In this section Jesus showed his compassion for a widow and her dead son by causing him to live again. This is the first time in the book of Luke that Jesus caused a dead person to live again. People were so excited that they spread the good news throughout the whole area.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus Brings a Widow’s Son Back to Life (GW)

Jesus raised a man from the dead

7:15a

And the dead man sat up and began to speak!

And the dead man sat up: Jesus caused the young man to live again, and then the young man sat up. In some languages, a literal translation might imply that the man was still dead when he sat up. If that is true in your language, you may need to add implied information. For example:

The man who had been dead came to life and sat up.

The man came back to life and sat up.

And the dead man: The Greek word that the BSB translates as the dead man is more literally “the corpse.” The term does not indicate whether the dead person was a man or a boy. It may be natural to use the same term that you used in 7:14c since it refers to the same person. (See the note on “Young man” at 7:14c.) In some languages it may be natural to translate this with a phrase such as:

the one who was dead

began to speak: The phrase began to speak indicates that the man starting speaking. The text does not tell what the young man said or to whom he was speaking. If you must supply such information, be as general as possible. For example:

and began to say things

started talking to them

7:15b

Then Jesus gave him back to his mother.

Then Jesus gave him back to his mother: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates literally as gave him back to his mother means “presented him to his mother.” In some languages it may be natural to use direct speech here. For example:

Jesus said to his mother, “Here is your son.”

uW Translation Notes:

ὁ νεκρὸς

the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀνεκάθισεν ὁ νεκρός καί ἤρξατο λαλεῖν καί ἔδωκεν αὐτόν τῇ μητρί αὐτοῦ)

The man was not still dead. He was now alive. It may be helpful to state this clearly. Alternate translation: [he man came back to life, no longer being dead, and]

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

ἔδωκεν αὐτὸν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτοῦ

˱he˲_gave (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀνεκάθισεν ὁ νεκρός καί ἤρξατο λαλεῖν καί ἔδωκεν αὐτόν τῇ μητρί αὐτοῦ)

The pronoun he refers to Jesus, and him and his refer to the young man. Alternate translation: [Jesus returned the young man to his mother]
