OET (OET-LV) And having_heard these things the Yaʸsous, marvelled at_him, and having_been_turned to_the crowd following after_him said:
I_am_saying to_you_all, not_even in the Israaʸl/(Yisrāʼēl) I_found so_much faith.
OET (OET-RV) When he heard that, Yeshua was amazed and turned to face the crowd that was following him and said, “I can tell you that never before in all of Yisrael have I encountered so much faith!”
This section tells how an army officer trusted Jesus to heal his servant. The officer was not a Jew; he was a Gentile, a Roman. He sent some Jewish leaders as messengers to ask Jesus to come and heal his servant. Later he sent some friends to say that it was not necessary for Jesus to come to his house. He believed that Jesus could heal his servant from a distance.
The Roman compared Jesus’ authority to his own authority as an army officer. As an officer, he could cause other soldiers to obey him by simply commanding them to do something. He recognized that Jesus also had authority and power to heal by only giving a command. Jesus was amazed that this Gentile trusted him so much. He said that the officer had more faith than any Jew whom he had met.
It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:
A Roman army officer shows great faith in Jesus
Jesus is amazed by the faith of a captain in the Roman army
The amazing faith of the centurion
There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 8:5–13.
When Jesus heard this, He marveled at the centurion.
¶ When Jesus heard these words, he was very surprised and pleased by the officer.
¶ Jesus marveled at the officer’s words.
¶ The officer’s message amazed Jesus.
When Jesus heard this: The word this refers to what the officer said in his message.
He marveled at the centurion: The word that the BSB translates as the centurion is literally “him” in Greek. You may find it helpful in your own language to use a clarifying word rather than the pronoun “him.” For example:
Jesus was amazed at the officer (GW)
He marveled: The phrase He marveled means that “Jesus was amazed.” The word marveled implies that he was very pleased and surprised. It pleased Jesus that the officer recognized his authority and had such great faith in him. Do not use a word that means to be amazed about something bad or displeasing.
Turning to the crowd following Him, He said,
He turned and said to the people who were following him,
He turned to address the crowd that was following him and said,
Turning to the crowd following Him, He said: Jesus turned around to look behind him at the crowd of people and to speak to them.
“I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.”
“I assure you, I have not met anyone who believes in me this strongly, even among the people of Israel!”
“I have certainly never found any person among the people of Israel who has as much confidence in me as this man who is not an Israelite does!”
I tell you: Jesus often used the words I tell you to begin a statement that he wanted to emphasize. It indicates that the statement was important and that people should listen carefully to it. Some other ways to show this emphasis could be:
Use a phrase before Jesus’ statement. For example:
Let me tell you this
Listen
I assure you
Express the emphasis within Jesus’ statement. For example:
In all of Israel I’ve never found anyone with this much faith! (CEV)
I have certainly not found such great faith, not even in Israel.

not even in Israel have I found such great faith: The phrase not even in Israel have I found such great faith implies, “I have not found any Israelites who believe in me as much as this Gentile does!” The phrase implies that Jesus expected the Jews to believe in him. He did not expect a Gentile (non-Jew) to believe in him more than the Jews did. Many Jews believed that Jesus could heal sick people by touching them. However, this Gentile believed that Jesus could heal from a distance just by speaking a word.
in Israel: The phrase in Israel means “among the Israelites.” It does not refer to location. This officer lived in Israel, but he was not one of the people (descendants) of Israel.
great faith: The word faith refers here to confidence that Jesus/God can do a certain thing. Here the officer had great faith because he was completely sure that Jesus had the authority to heal his servant with a word. See believe, Meaning 2, in the Glossary.

Jesus says this to emphasize what he is about to tell the people in the crowd. Alternate translation: [Now listen to this carefully]

The implication is that Jesus expected Jewish people to have this kind of faith, but they did not. He did not expect Gentiles to have this kind of faith, yet this man did. It may be helpful to say this explicitly in your translation. Alternate translation: [I have not found anyone among the Israelites who trusts me as much as this Gentile does]

Jesus used the name of the nation, Israel, to represent the people who belong to that nation. Alternate translation: [not even in any Israelite]

Here, found is an idiom. The word does not suggest that Jesus was searching for something he had lost. Alternate translation: [have I encountered such faith]
7:9 I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel! While many in Israel were unresponsive to the good news of salvation, some Gentiles believed and found salvation.
