OET (OET-LV)And it_became on on_the_ next _day, he_was_gone into a_city being_called Nain, and the apprentices/followers of_him and a_ great _crowd were_going_with with_him.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 7:11–17: Jesus caused a widow’s son to live again

In this section Jesus showed his compassion for a widow and her dead son by causing him to live again. This is the first time in the book of Luke that Jesus caused a dead person to live again. People were so excited that they spread the good news throughout the whole area.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus Brings a Widow’s Son Back to Life (GW)

Jesus raised a man from the dead

7:11a

Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain.

Soon afterward: The event in this section happened not long after Jesus healed the centurion’s servant. It may have happened the next day. There is a textual issue here. Many Greek manuscripts have the phrase that the BSB translates as “Soon afterward.” However, other manuscripts have a phrase that can be translated as “on the next day.” The KJV is the only major English version that follows those manuscripts. If the national language version in your area has the same reading as the KJV here, you may want to mention it in a footnote in your translation. For example: Some Greek manuscripts say “on the next day.”

a town called Nain: The town of Nain was probably in the district of Galilee, not far from the town of Nazareth. Though the Greek word that the BSB translates as town is translated as “city” in many English versions, here it probably referred to a small town.Modern day Nain, generally thought to correspond to the biblical reference, is a small village of about 200 inhabitants, and it was never walled. Another way to translate this is:

the village of Nain (NLT)

7:11b

His disciples went with Him, accompanied by a large crowd.

His disciples: There is a textual issue here. The earliest Greek manuscripts and those with most widespread support say “his disciples.” Later manuscripts say “many disciples” or “many of his disciples.” The KJV is the only major English version that follows those manuscripts. If the national language version in your area has the same reading as the KJV here, you may want to mention it in a footnote in your translation. For example: Some Greek manuscripts say “many of his disciples.” The Greek word that the BSB translates as disciples means “learners” who are in a special relationship with a teacher. The learners commit themselves to their teacher in order to learn from him and live according to his teaching and example. Disciples often lived with their teacher and followed him wherever he went.

Some ways to translate this are:

students/learners

apprentices

followers

See how you translated this term at 5:30a. See also disciple in the Glossary for more information.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

καὶ ἐγένετο

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἑξῆς ἐπορεύθη εἰς πόλιν καλουμένην Ναΐν καί συνεπορεύοντο αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί αὐτοῦ καί ὄχλος πολύς)

Luke uses this phrase to introduce a new event in the story. Use a word, phrase, or other method in your language that is natural for introducing a new event.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἐν τῷ ἑξῆς

on ˱on˲_the_‹day› next

Luke may be using the term day to refer a particular time, as UST suggests by saying “soon after that.” However, this could also mean literally the next day.

Note 3 topic: translate-names

Ναΐν

Nain

Nain is the name of a city.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:11 The location of the village of Nain is uncertain; it might be the modern town of Nein, six miles southeast of Nazareth.
