SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:28–36: Three disciples saw Jesus’ glory

In 9:26 Jesus spoke about the time when he would return to earth and people would see his glory. Then in 9:28–36 God caused Jesus to be glorified for a short time. Peter, James, and John saw this. During that time, Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with Jesus. Peter suggested building shelters for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. God showed these disciples that Jesus was greater than the great prophets Moses and Elijah because Jesus was God’s Son.

Some other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus Talks with Moses and Elijah (NCV)

God showed three disciples who Jesus really was

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 17:1–12 and Mark 9:2–13.

9:29a

And as He was praying, the appearance of His face changed,

the appearance of His face changed: The phrase the appearance of His face changed means that Jesus’ face looked different in some way. The context implies that it began to shine with heavenly glory. Choose a word or phrase that can be used of a good change.

9:29b

and His clothes became radiantly white.

His clothes became radiantly white: Jesus’ clothes became white and shining. The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as radiantly white is literally “white, gleaming like lightning.” This means “flashing white” or “dazzling white.” It is not necessary to refer to lightning in your translation. For example:

shining white (NCV)

In some languages it may be more natural to express this phrase with two separate terms. For example:

extremely white and shining

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

καὶ ἐγένετο

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ προσεύχεσθαι αὐτόν τό εἶδος τοῦ προσώπου αὐτοῦ ἕτερον καί ὁ ἱματισμός αὐτοῦ λευκός ἐξαστράπτων)

Luke uses this phrase to introduce a new development within this episode. Use a word, phrase, or other method in your language that is natural for this purpose.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:29 his clothes became dazzling white (literally became bright as a flash of lightning): Jesus’ glory shone through his human body (cp. Ezek 1:4; Dan 7:9; see also Exod 34:29).
