TSNTyndale Study Notes:

34:1-35 God granted Moses’ request (33:18), showed Moses his goodness (34:1-9), and renewed the covenant (34:10-35). This renewal was a unilateral statement by God. God would indeed go with his people, maintaining his covenant promises even though they had broken the covenant (32:1-6) and deserved nothing better than death and abandonment.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

וַיְהִ֗י

and=he/it_was

This marks a change of scene which you should mark in a natural way in your language.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

The statement about Moses’ descent from the mountain is repeated almost verbatim, but does not refer to two events. If this would be misunderstood you may need to state it only once in translation as in the UST. Alternate translation: “Then Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he was coming down from the mountain, he was carrying the two tablets of the testimony in his hands.”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

וּמֹשֶׁ֣ה לֹֽא־יָדַ֗ע כִּ֥י קָרַ֛ן ע֥וֹר פָּנָ֖יו בְּדַבְּר֥וֹ אִתּֽוֹ

and,Moses not knowing that/for/because/then/when shone skin/leather his/its=faces/face in/on/at/with,speaking,his with=him/it

In some languages it will make more sense to state that Moses’ face shone before saying that he did not know that as in the UST.

קָרַ֛ן

shone

Alternate translation: “became radiant”
