uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) When you go to war … oppresses you

(Some words not found in UHB: and=because/when go war in/on/at/with,land_of,your(pl) on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,adversary the,attacks DOM,you(pl) and,sound_an_alarm in/on/at/with,trumpets and,remembered to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before YHWH God_of,your(pl) and,saved from,enemies_of,your(pl) )

Yahweh is speaking to Moses and uses the word “you,” but he is actually referring the people of Israel going to war. Alternate translation: “When the people of Israel to war … oppresses Israel”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) then you must sound an alarm with the trumpets

(Some words not found in UHB: and=because/when go war in/on/at/with,land_of,your(pl) on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,adversary the,attacks DOM,you(pl) and,sound_an_alarm in/on/at/with,trumpets and,remembered to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before YHWH God_of,your(pl) and,saved from,enemies_of,your(pl) )

Here Yahweh again speaks to Moses using the word “you” but actually wants Moses to have the priests blow the trumpets. Alternate translation: “then you must command the priests to sound an alarm with the trumpets”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

(Occurrence 0) call you to mind

(Some words not found in UHB: and=because/when go war in/on/at/with,land_of,your(pl) on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,adversary the,attacks DOM,you(pl) and,sound_an_alarm in/on/at/with,trumpets and,remembered to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before YHWH God_of,your(pl) and,saved from,enemies_of,your(pl) )

This phrase “call to mind” means to remember. Alternate translation: “remember you”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

10:1-10 Israel needed signals that were loud and clear so that the tribes could receive instructions. Two silver trumpets provided a simple, effective means to signal all the tribes to move.
• These trumpets were not the ram’s horns (Hebrew shopar) mentioned frequently in the Old Testament (e.g., Josh 6:4-6); they were fashioned by Israelite craftsmen from hammered silver brought out of Egypt.
