As in the previous verse, Yahweh alternates between singular and plural forms. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could use just the singular or plural throughout this verse. Do what you did in the previous verse. Alternate translation: [And he or she shall confess his or her sin that he or she did did, and he or she shall return his or her guilt in its head and he or she shall add its fifth upon it, and he or she shall give to him to whom he or she is guilty] or [And they shall confess their sin that they did, and they shall return their guilt in its head and they shall add its fifth upon it, and they shall give to him to whom they are guilty]

Here the masculine pronouns he, his, and him have a generic sense that includes both men and women. This can be seen from verse 6, which explicitly refers to “a man or a woman.” If it would be helpful to your readers, you could use language in your translation that is clearly inclusive of both men and women. Alternate translation: [and that person shall return his or her guilt in its head and he or she shall add its fifth upon it, and he or she shall give to the person to whom he or she is guilty]

Yahweh is using in its head as a common expression of his culture to mean “in its entirety” or “in full.” If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [in its entirety]

Yahweh is using add its fifth as a common expression of his culture to mean “include an additional 20 percent.” If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly.
