SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 18:1–24: Announcements/Messages about Babylon

In this section, three heavenly beings each announce something about Babylon. The first announcement is that the city is destroyed. Her riches and prosperity have been taken away.

The second announcement is that God’s people should leave Babylon before God destroys her. It also describes how kings and others mourn over the destroyed city.

The third announcement is that Babylon will never be built again.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

An angel announced that Babylon was destroyed, and some groups are sad

Announcements about the destruction of Babylon

Various people talk about Babylon

18:15a

The merchants who sold these things and grew their wealth from her

The merchants who sold these things and grew their wealth from her: The Greek words are literally “The merchants of these things, the ones having become rich from her.” It refers to the merchants in 18:11a. They sold the cargoes listed in 18:12–13. They made a lot of profit from selling those things to her. For example:

The merchants of these things, who became rich from her (NASB)

grew their wealth from her: This phrase indicates that the merchants made a lot of money from selling their cargoes to Babylon. For example:

became rich from doing business in that city (GNT)

18:15b

will stand at a distance, in fear of her torment.

will stand at a distance, in fear of her torment: The Greek words indicate that the merchants stood far away because they were afraid of the suffering of Babylon. They did not want the terrible things that happened to her to also happen to them. Other ways to translate these words are:

will stand at a distance because of the fear of her torment (NASB)

will be standing at a safe distance through fear of her anguish (NJB)

torment: This word refers to feeling much hurt and pain. See how you translated this word in 18:10.

18:15c

They will weep and mourn,

They will weep and mourn: This phrase has the same meaning as the same phrase in 18:11. See how you translated it there.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

διὰ τὸν φόβον τοῦ βασανισμοῦ αὐτῆς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οἱ ἔμποροι τούτων οἱ πλουτήσαντες ἀπʼ αὐτῆς ἀπό μακρόθεν στήσονται διά τόν φόβον τοῦ βασανισμοῦ αὐτῆς κλαίοντες καί πενθοῦντες)

See how you translated this same expression in [18:10](../18/10.md). Alternate translation: [because they are afraid of the fire that is tormenting her]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

κλαίοντες καὶ πενθοῦντες

weeping (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οἱ ἔμποροι τούτων οἱ πλουτήσαντες ἀπʼ αὐτῆς ἀπό μακρόθεν στήσονται διά τόν φόβον τοῦ βασανισμοῦ αὐτῆς κλαίοντες καί πενθοῦντες)

The terms weeping and mourning mean similar things. John is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [weeping bitterly]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

18:1-24 This chapter contains seven poetic responses to the fall of Babylon (or Rome; see study note on 17:5).
