OET (OET-LV)And the children of_her I_will_be_killing_off with death, and will_be_knowing all the assemblies that I am the one searching kidneys and hearts, and I_will_be_giving to_you_all to_each according_to the works of_you_all.

OET (OET-RV)I will kill her children, then all the assemblies will know that I am the one who searches people’s affections and hearts, and who punishes or rewards each one of you depending on your actions.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:18–29: Jesus spoke to the church at Thyatira

In this section, Jesus spoke to the people who believed in him at Thyatira. He saw that they had grown in their faith. Jesus warned them about allowing an immoral woman named Jezebel to remain among them. He encouraged the believers who had not followed Jezebel’s sinful teachings to remain faithful. Lastly, he gave a promise for any believer who persevered in his faith.

Translate this heading as you did for the other messages to the churches.

2:23a

Then I will strike her children dead,

Then I will strike her children dead: The phrase strike…dead means “kill.” For example:

I will kill her children (GW)

These verses do not say how the children would be killed. In some languages, the way the person was killed must be included. If that is true in your language, translate this clause so that it allows as general a meaning as possible.

her children: This phrase refers figuratively to adults who followed Jezebel’s teachings.Aune (page 206) says, “‘her children’ refers to the group that should probably be identified with the disciples of ‘Jezebel’ or members of her prophetic circle.” In some languages a literal translation would wrongly refer only to actual children of Jezebel. If that is true in your language, you may want to:

2:23b

and all the churches will know that I am the One who searches minds and hearts,

and: The Greek word that the BSB translates as and sometimes introduces a result. Other ways to translate this word are:

This will teach (REB)

Then (NIV)

From that

In some languages it is necessary or more natural to allow the context to imply the connection and not translate this word.

all the churches: This phrase indicates that the churches will learn that Jesus searches hearts and minds because they would hear what happened to Jezebel’s followers.

In some languages it is necessary to say that the believers in the churches will know. For example:

people/believers in all the churches

believers wherever they gather

God’s people in all places

searches minds and hearts: The Greek words are literally “searches the hearts and kidneys.” These two organs of the body (“hearts” and “kidneys”) in Greek refer figuratively to the true desires and thoughts of a person. This phrase indicates that Jesus knows what a person truly desires and what a person truly thinks.

In some languages different organs are used to refer figuratively to true desires and thoughts. For example:

searches livers and brains

In some languages non-figurative words or phrases are used. For example:

knows everyone’s thoughts and wishes (GNT)

examines desires/intentions and thoughts

2:23c

and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

I will repay each of you according to your deeds: This clause indicates that Jesus will reward good deeds and punish bad deeds. Other ways to translate this clause are:

I will give to each of you as your works deserve. (RSV)

I will reward each of you for what you have done. (GW)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τὰ τέκνα αὐτῆς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί τά τέκνα αὐτῆς ἀποκτενῶ ἐν θανάτῳ καί γνώσονται πάσαι αἱ ἐκκλησίαι ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμί ὁ ἐραυνῶν νεφρούς καί καρδίας καί δώσω ὑμῖν ἑκάστῳ κατά τά ἔργα ὑμῶν)

The word children could mean: (1) literal children of Jezebel and the men who, as verse 22 describes, have been “committing adultery” with her. Alternate translation: [the children she has had with her adulterous lovers] (2) the disciples of Jezebel. (However, since Jesus says in the previous verse that he will cause these disciples to experience tribulation if they do not repent, it appears that Jesus is giving them the opportunity to repent, so it seems unlikely that he would immediately pronounce a death sentence against them here.) Alternate translation: [her disciples]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἐραυνῶν νεφροὺς καὶ καρδίας

I (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί τά τέκνα αὐτῆς ἀποκτενῶ ἐν θανάτῳ καί γνώσονται πάσαι αἱ ἐκκλησίαι ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμί ὁ ἐραυνῶν νεφρούς καί καρδίας καί δώσω ὑμῖν ἑκάστῳ κατά τά ἔργα ὑμῶν)

Here, kidneys represent people’s thoughts and hearts represent their emotions. Alternate translation: [I am able to determine exactly what each person is thinking and feeling]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular

ὑμῖν & ὑμῶν

˱to˲_you_all & ˱of˲_you_all

The word you is plural in these instances. Jesus is speaking more directly to the believers in Thyatira in order to warn them that he is going to judge them imminently. You may consider using the plural form of “you” here if that would be natural in your language.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:18-29 The letter to the church in Thyatira confronts Christians who mix Christianity with pagan practices and a worldly lifestyle.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
