2:15 They eat food that has been sacrificed to idols, and they commit sexual sins.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:12–17: Jesus spoke to the church at Pergamum

In this section, Jesus spoke to the people who believed in him at Pergamum. He saw that they had remained faithful to him despite opposition and persecution. But he warned them not to allow people believing in false teachings to remain in the church. He warned them to repent. Lastly, he gave a promise for any believer who persevered in his faith.

Translate this heading as you did for the messages to the churches at Ephesus and Smyrna.

2:15

In the same way, some of you also hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.

In the same way: The people obeying the teaching of the Nicolaitans sinned in ways similar to the sinful ways of those obeying the teaching of Balaam (2:14b).Smalley (page 69) translates the Greek word as “similarly.” Beale (page 251) calls the Nicolaitans “another group…that was teaching the same thing as the Balaam (group).” For example:

Likewise (NIV)

In a similar way (NLT)

some of you also hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans: There is a textual issue in 2:15: (1) Some early Greek manuscripts have the word Nicolaitans (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) One early Greek manuscript have the words Nicolaitans which I hate (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it. This clause indicates that some of the people in the church in Pergamum followed the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Other ways to translate this clause are:

there are also some among you who follow the teaching of the Nicolaitans (NET)

You also have some who follow what the Nicolaitans teach. (GW)

among your number are some who hold just as closely to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. (JBP)

See how you spelled the name Nicolaitans in 2:6.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:12-17 The letter to the church in Pergamum portrays Christians who are tempted to compromise their morality and their loyalty to God. The city of Pergamum was the earliest capital of the Roman province of Asia. It contained a famous library, and its citizens developed the use of animal skins as writing materials.
