OET (OET-LV) And I_gave to_her time, in_order_that she_may_repent, and not she_willed to_repent of the sexual_immorality of_her.
OET (OET-RV) Even though I’ve given her time to repent, she’s still not willing to turn away from her immorality.
In this section, Jesus spoke to the people who believed in him at Thyatira. He saw that they had grown in their faith. Jesus warned them about allowing an immoral woman named Jezebel to remain among them. He encouraged the believers who had not followed Jezebel’s sinful teachings to remain faithful. Lastly, he gave a promise for any believer who persevered in his faith.
Translate this heading as you did for the other messages to the churches.
Even though I have given her time to repent of her immorality,
I gave her time to repent of those immoral deeds,
I allowed her time to stop sinning and change her thinking about her wicked ways,
I have given her time to repent: This clause indicates that Jesus had warned the woman earlier to repent. Then he allowed her some time to repent. Other ways to translate this clause are:
I gave her time to repent (RSV)
I gave her a chance to turn from her sins (CEV)
I told her to repent and allowed her time to do so
repent: The word repent here refers to changing one’s mind, heart, and actions. The person would then stop sinning. See how you translated this word in 2:5.
her immorality: Here the word immorality refers to sexual immorality (2:20d). But it probably implies idolatry (2:20e), because God wants her to repent of both sexual immorality and idolatry. So the BSB uses the word immorality, which allows for various kinds of immoral behavior, including sexual immorality.
she is unwilling.
but she does not want to.
but she refuses to do so.
she is unwilling: This clause indicates that the woman did not want to repent. She chose to continue sinning by teaching lies and doing evil things. Other ways to translate this clause are:
she does not want to (GNT)
she refuses (RSV)
2:21 Through messengers such as John, Christ had given this false prophet opportunity to repent of her sinful teachings and actions, but like many, she had refused (cp. 9:20-21).
OET (OET-LV) And I_gave to_her time, in_order_that she_may_repent, and not she_willed to_repent of the sexual_immorality of_her.
OET (OET-RV) Even though I’ve given her time to repent, she’s still not willing to turn away from her immorality.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
