OET (OET-LV)Therefore be_remembering from_where you_have_fallen and repent, and the first works do.
And if not, I_am_coming to_you and will_be_removing the lampstand of_you out_of the place of_it, if not you_may_repent.

OET (OET-RV)So now, you need to remember where you’ve fallen from, and repent and repeat how you behaved at the beginning, but if you don’t, I’ll come to you and if you don’t repent, I’ll remove your lampstand from its place.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:1–7: Jesus spoke to the church at Ephesus

In this section, Jesus spoke to the people at Ephesus who believed in him. He said that they were doing some good things, but they were also doing a bad thing. He then encouraged them and warned them to repent. Lastly, he gave a promise to any believer who persevered in his faith.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The Message to Ephesus (GNT)

Jesus gave a message to the church at Ephesus

Advice to the group of believers at Ephesus

2:5a

Therefore, keep in mind how far you have fallen.

Therefore: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as Therefore introduces the desired result of hearing the rebuke in 2:4. The believers should remember and repent. Other ways to translate this word are:

then (RSV)

So (AB)

You should begin this verse in the way that is natural in your language.

keep in mind: This phrase refers to thinking again about something that is already known. Other ways to translate this word are:

Think again about

Do not forget

how far you have fallen: This is a figure of speech. The phrase how far you have fallen indicates that the believers no longer loved as much.

In some languages a literal translation would not have the correct meaning. If that is true in your language, you may want to:

2:5b

Repent and perform the deeds you did at first.

2:5b tells another thing that the believers must do.

Repent: This word is a command to change one’s mind, heart, and actions. Jesus commanded the believers to change the way they thought and behaved. This command indicates that they were to repent of the falling away of which Jesus spoke in 2:5a. Other ways to translate this word are:

Turn back to me (NLT)

change your hearts and lives

leave the ways of sin and follow the ways of God

perform the deeds you did at first: This clause refers to the things the believers did because of their great love when they first believed. Your translation should indicate or imply a connection from this clause to the phrase “first love” in 2:4b. In some languages it is more natural to include the implied information. For example:

act as you used to when you first loved me

2:5c

But if you do not repent,

2:5c–d

In 2:5c–d Jesus told them the consequences of not repenting. It is a threat to punish them if they do not repent. See also the General Comment at 2:5d.

2:5d

I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.

I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place: There is a textual issue in 2:5d: (1) Some early Greek manuscripts have the word come (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) Some early Greek manuscripts have the words come quickly (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it. Using the symbol of the lampstand, these words indicate that if the Ephesian believers do not repent, Jesus will cause their church to no longer exist. The believers would scatter, and none would meet in Ephesus.

In some languages people will not understand these words to have that meaning. If that is true in your language, you may want to:

General Comment on 2:5c–d

The RSV follows the order of the Greek phrases quite literally here. It says:

If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. (RSV)

The phrase “If not” can also be translated as “If you do not do that.” The BSB combines the Greek phrases “if not” and “unless you repent.” The BSB also places them together at the beginning of the sentence. For example:

But if you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.

Another way to order the phrases is to reverse 2:5d and 2:5c:

5dI will come to you and take your lamp stand from its place 5cif you don’t change. (GW)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

πόθεν πέπτωκας

from_where ˱you˲_˓have˒_fallen

Jesus is speaking as if the believers in Ephesus have literally fallen from a height. He means that they are no longer devoted to him in the way they originally were. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [how much you once loved me]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

τὰ πρῶτα ἔργα ποίησον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: μνημόνευε Οὖν πόθεν πέπτωκας καί μετανόησον καί τά πρῶτα ἔργα ποίησον εἰ Δέ μή ἔρχομαι σοί καί κινήσω τήν λυχνίαν σοῦ ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτῆς ἐάν μή μετανοήσῃς)

Here the word first indicates earliest in time rather than chief in importance. Alternate translation: [demonstrate your devotion to me in the way you did originally]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

κινήσω τὴν λυχνίαν σου ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτῆς

˓will_be˒_removing (Some words not found in SR-GNT: μνημόνευε Οὖν πόθεν πέπτωκας καί μετανόησον καί τά πρῶτα ἔργα ποίησον εἰ Δέ μή ἔρχομαι σοί καί κινήσω τήν λυχνίαν σοῦ ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτῆς ἐάν μή μετανοήσῃς)

Jesus is not speaking of a literal lampstand here; when he says that he will remove this lampstand, he means that the assembly of believers in Ephesus will no longer exist. However, since Jesus refers to the lampstands in John’s vision at the opening of this letter, it would be good to show the connection between the reference there and the reference here. In your translation, you might translate the term lampstand directly here but then explain its meaning. Alternate translation: [I will remove your lampstand from its place, yes, you will no longer be a church]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:5 Christ calls even those who keep the faith to turn back to him and repent of cold-heartedness. The warning, I will come and remove your lampstand, means that they would lose their status as a church; God would treat them as he did the apostates within Israel (see Rom 11).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
