SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:1–7: Introduction

In this first section, Paul introduced himself and the gospel about Jesus. He also greeted the people to whom he was writing.

Before you begin to translate this section, consider what is the natural way to begin a letter in your language. Consider also how closely to follow that way in your translation.

Consider whether or not you want a section heading here. The GNT, for example, does not have one here. It is good to read or translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Here are other possible headings for this section:

Paul introduced himself and the gospel about Jesus and greeted the Roman believers

Paul and His Message of Good News (CEV)

Paul began his letter to the Christians in Rome

1:6

And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

And you also are among: Here Paul indicated that the believers in Rome were also a part of “all the Gentiles” in 1:5d. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

among whom are you(plur) also

And you are included among them

This also includes you who are in Rome (GNT)

those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ: The Greek phrase is literally “called (ones) of Jesus Christ.” It further describes “you,” and refers to all of the believers in Rome. It does not separate some people called “you” here from other people called “you” here. For the correct meaning in some languages, translators must avoid the word who. For example:

and you are called to belong to Jesus Christ

God has called you to belong to Jesus Christ

those who are called: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause here. For example:

whom God called

called: Here the word called means “chosen to be given a special benefit or purpose.” God invited people in Rome to believe in Jesus and therefore belong to Jesus. Here are other ways to translate this word:

appointed

chosen ones

to belong to Jesus Christ: The Greek phrase is literally “of Jesus Christ.” Here it indicates a relationship with Jesus Christ. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

to be joined to Jesu CristoKankanaey Back Translation on TW.

to be siblings of Jesus Christ

General Comment on 1:5a–6

In the Greek NT in 1:5a–c, the phrase “to the obedience of faith” is first, then “all those among the Gentiles,” then “on behalf of His name.” This more clearly connects “all those among the Gentiles” to “to the obedience of faith.” For example:

to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name, 6including you

But “all those among the Gentiles” (1:5c) also connects to “And you” in 1:6. If you do not translate “all those among the Gentiles” last in 1:5, you may need to make the connection to 1:6 clear. For example:

to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name. 6Those Gentiles include you

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐν οἷς

among whom

Here, whom refers to “the Gentiles” who were mentioned in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. See how you translated “the Gentiles” in the previous verse. Alternate translation: [among the nations] or [among the Gentiles]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular

ὑμεῖς

you_all

In this letter, with four exceptions, the words you and “your” are plural and refer to the recipients of this letter, who are the believers in Rome (See [1:7](../01/07.md)). If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [you believers in Christ at Rome]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

κλητοὶ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐν οἷς ἐστέ καί ὑμεῖς κλητοί Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ)

Paul is using the possessive form to describe called ones who were called by Jesus Christ. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [ones called by Jesus Christ]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:1-17 These verses contain the normal features of New Testament letter introductions: an identification of the writer (1:1-6) and readers (1:7), a thanksgiving (1:8-15), and the theme of the letter (1:16-17).
